This is the 4th book of the Doormaker series. I have thoroughly enjoyed the series including this last book. It is just as exciting as the first and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I kept wanting to skip ahead to find out more right away, but the fun of reading this book kept me on track. The characters are completely believable, and I became invested in their lives from the first book on.
If you want to read this book, I suggest you start from the beginning. It carries you along on the journey to the One Door in a sequential order with refinement of the characters and explanations of what is happening and what has happened through the tale. As we go along for the ride with Maella, Sethlo and Claritsa we learn about them, their feelings and their desires as they grow from young teens to young adults. We see Maella maturing and understanding her role in the opening of doors to discovering what she must do when she finds that single door that can improve or end the worlds. If you love fantasy, you will definitely love this series.
There was a lot going on in this book. I was unsure about certain character's motivations right up until the end. I liked one of the messages of the book, that people can make awful mistakes and still be worthy of love, and maybe even trust. Characters from throughout the series made appearances, some positive, some not. I was content with the ending, but if there turns out to be another book somewhere down the road, I'll be glad.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
The amount of light and darkness that Mrs Thornton injects in to each book is amazing. A truly gifted storyteller and a master at balance, and flow. She definitely has great instincts on just when to hit the gas and when to pull back.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This in no way has influenced this review. Strong 4 star read.
I for one really enjoy how she finished the series. A lot of the characters did a lot of growing, some changed in ways that were for the better and others that did the opposite, but it all made sense on how it was shown in this series. There were quite a few surprises still in this book, some that definitely brought some tears to my eyes and I wished weren't necessary, but the author definitely made the right decision when she wrote the book the way she did, even when some of the decisions I am sure were difficult but they added depth to the book.
Maella is a strong character who continuously grew in this story. Did she make mistakes, oh heck yeah and lots of them but that is part of being a teen and growing up. Let's be honest, the cards she was dealt were difficult and how she handled it all was probably better than what most would have been able to do. Thankfully she had some great friends who stood by her side through thick and thin. Some weren't as steadfast but they all served their purpose throughout in one way or another.
This series was different from what you mostly read in the paranormal genre which is another reason why I enjoyed this so much. The author is a great writer and has a natural way with word that leads you through the story effortlessly. I can recommend this series to fellow lovers of the paranormal!
