The single release of the song "Fear Inoculum" definitely got my hopes up as it's a very good song, much in the vein of their "10,000 Days" style. But overall I find myself to be somewhat let down. Pneuma has great moments, and 7empest is fantastic for the first 9 minutes or so (the rest of the 15+ minute playtime is just instrumental jam). But beyond that, nothing else is particularly memorable for me. It's really too bad they didn't capture more of the energy of 7empest across more of the album. Just seems like a bit of a lackluster affair for this long time fan.

Am I OK with TOOL releasing an album that sounds very much like everything they've ever done? Absolutely; and that's what I was expecting. Some of their best work strongly reminds me of "something from their last album" and they've always been a great example of how arrangement of a song is important. But Fear Inoculum is easily the most repetitive album I've heard in years. Every song sounds the same. And I don't mean the same riffs over and over. I mean the same order of arrangement with slightly different riffs and very little imagination. It's an album that spends 60 minutes trying to be the same song over and over again, before it finally realizes that maybe it's time to write something good. I literally get half way through these songs and go "now they're going to do that riff they do where it's just 4 chords" and low and behold, "DUN dun DOOOOOOONE" Chocolate Chip Trip is Danny Carry fully utilizing his kit: something we haven't really seen from him outside of a live performance. But it ends before it takes off. 7empest is probably one of the best TOOL songs of all time and arguably Adam Jones' best work. It's a great example of TOOL sounding like TOOL. I guess what I'm trying to say is there's a difference between taking a song where the listener hopes it to go (with sometimes exceeding expectations) and taking every song to a safe destination. Fear Inoculum is good, but it's also very, very boring.

I could see people not liking this album, particularly people that really like the style of the older albums. To each their own. Fear Inoculum is the next evolution of Tool in a long progression of changes. And its amazing how far they have come.

I love introspective tool and this album feels like disposition/reflection, but for a full album. It’s a very slow burn, which again I really like and for this moment in my life, this is exactly what I want.

This is a deep and beautiful album. An album that I can put on and just sit there and think. Its like someone is messaging my brain and helping me work through the problems in my mind. That means a lot to me and I really dig it.

As far as the transition songs go, I have deleted them. They just screw with the flow of the album and its long enough as it is without having to sit through random noise in-between great tracks. My digital album now reflects the physical release, which didn't bother including them either.

Besides that, I think I love this album.

Having heard my first song from Tool in 1994 they are the only band I can think of who's sound has aged like wine. It's never been trendy, it's always been what they wanted to produce and always evolved album to album. This is no exception. They posted the album for free. I don't think they need the money but I paid for it anyways. Each track is a carefully constructed piece of musical art. I've thought of many bars set by artists from the 1960's to now and feel like this album and their body of work has set it.

I liked nothing about this album. It's and hour of build up that goes no where and the rest is squeaks, bells and whistles. Adam Jones should consider starting a rock band.

Oddly disappointing. I'm a tool fan this is just to mellow of an album nothing really upbeat and the songs seem to drag. These digital extra songs are just unessasry noise. They market it like your getting something special. I feel asleep during the play theough it was that mellow. I'm hoping the next album in 13 years will be a up beat hitter.

There is nothing of any substance here. Maynards vocals are boring and lyrics are pointless. None of these songs, for me, have caught my attention. Great riffs here and there, but ultimately discombobulated everywhere. Im used to Tool being a little all over the place, but this is from one shore to the other. Can't headbang to this!

I Tool sono considerati la miglior band prog metal al mondo adesso come adesso. C'è chi li definisce anche i "Pink Floyd del metal" data la loro propensione alla sperimentazione.
Dopo 13 anni di silenzio, ecco che esce il nuovo album, Fear Inoculum. La title track rilasciata come singolo non mi ha fatto impazzire, una bella canzone con un bel testo e musicalmente azzeccata ma un po' arida. Speravo che il resto dell'album sarebbe stato migliore, ma mi sbagliavo.
Fear Inoculum non è altro che un'auto celebrazione di Adam Jones (il chitarrista) ed è chiarissimo già al primo ascolto (anzi, è già chiaro dal booklet che si trova nell'edizione deluxe, dove il ritratto di Jones torreggia su quello degli altri circondato da un'aura dorata).
Jones è bravo, bravissimo, non fraintendetemi. Un vero e proprio virtuoso. Un artista musicale e grafico di primo livello (è lui a realizzare i videoclip e gli artwork della band).
Il problema dei virtuosi è che spesso sostituiscono la tecnica al sentimento e Jones ne è l'esempio lampante: negli altri album dei Tool questo è mitigato da Maynard, che con il suo incredibile spettro vocale è capace di trasmettere un vortice di emozioni.
In Fear Inoculum questo non succede: ho percepito un Maynard stanco, quasi annoiato, che non sfrutta la sua voce nemmeno per un decimo del suo potenziale. E' sempre piatta e cacofonica, completamente priva degli sprazzi di rabbia e malinconia degli album precedenti.
Batteria e basso sono completamente eclissati dalla chitarra di Jones, che si infila dappertutto sfociando in assoli lunghi, monotoni e asettici.
Le canzoni solo lunghissime, eterne. Avevo già ascoltato Descending e Invincible a Firenze e mi avevano annoiato, quindi in CD mi risultano ancora più pesanti.
Il problema più grosso sono però le melodie riciclate: Fear Inoculum è letteralmente Reflection (Lateralus) annacquata, Pneuma è Vicarious (10000 Days), e così via. Da un gruppo come i Tool non me lo aspettavo, ci sono rimasto davvero male.
In conclusione, questo album è sì ricco di virtuosismi, sia chiaro, ma povero di emozioni.
Molto prog, poco metal. Molto sperimentale, poco emozionante.
E non ne sono un fan.

P.s.: appunto per l'edizione deluxe: il cofanetto è oggettivamente una figata. Booklet molto curato, piccolo schermo nel mezzo che riproduce un video col relativo audio...fantastico.

Ho letto recensioni di tutti i tipi su Fear Inoculum. A me i Tool piacciono parecchio, questo probabilmente rende questa mia recensione un'opinione "di parte" ma non mi interessa.
Ho amato i Tool di Aenima, mi sono lasciato trasportare da Lateralus e penso che 10.000 Days sia un vero e proprio affresco sonoro, quindi le mie aspettative erano decisamente alte. Personalmente reputo Fear Inoculum un ulteriore passo avanti, e da musicista (per passione) quando leggo recensioni che ne parlano male penso a mio zio che davanti a Guernica ha detto "cos'è 'sta roba?".
Leggendo in giro, uno dice che Invincible sembra Schism, un altro dice che Pneuma sembra Schism, come se conoscessero solo Schism. A me serviranno almeno 200 ascolti per capire cosa fa Danny Carey in Pneuma, e mi sono sentito come al minuto sette di Rosetta Stoned quando con calma glaciale viene introdotto nel cervello il concetto che non ti è più concesso "capire" ma solo "ascoltare".
Io ci ho sentito dentro molte cose, dai Pink Floyd dei primi '70 nell'assolo di 7empest agli Smiths più malinconici nella prima metà di Culling Voices.
Invincibile ha un crescendo finale che ti spazza via e Descending è quella che più mi ricorda i Tool di 15 anni fa.
Ma quello che mi sconvolge è che i pezzi sono tutti belli, e con un disco dei Tool è la prima volta che mi succede.
E anche se non c'è il pezzone su cui fare headbanging, qui siamo comunque su un altro pianeta ragazzi.
"Eh, allora non hai mai sentito Zappa!" sì vabbè, potremmo stare qui delle ore.
Concludendo: massimo rispetto per la mole di lavoro (che purtroppo solo se conosci la musica puoi capire) e per il fatto che comunque la difficoltà dell'ascolto non pregiudica il successo commerciale di questo gruppo.
Unici.

Expanded Book Edition

So Tool finally release a new album, but it comes out at a ridiculous price with packaging involving a little screen & a video you can hardly see on it. I'm pretty gullible when it comes to deluxe editions, etc. but even I couldn't justify picking this up.

A few months later & what's this? A repackaging in an A5 hardback book along with a set of really rather nice lenticular postcards. You also get a download code for the video track included in the earlier edition, so now you can watch it on a decent sized screen whilst listening on proper speakers. Okay, it's just over £30, but it's a really nice package; much better than the original. In fact, if I had stumped up for the CD with the little screen, I'd be pretty upset about now.

The music? If Lateralus is Tool's best album (& it is), Fear Inoculum is easily as good. It might even be better than Lateralus, but I'll reserve judgement until I've lived with it for a couple of months.

Finally, if you buy this through Amazon, you can download the Autorip which includes the short tracks they couldn't fit on the CD.

Ok, I've been a Tool fan for as long as I can remember. Seen then ever time they've played Manchester and festivals in the UK. I've sat eagerly awaiting this new album for 13 years. Can't understand why they thought releasing a really expensive version first was a great idea, I waited for a cheaper version eventually the book version cam out and I found a good deal. I've listened to the album many, many times and I am not blown away. It is a good album but I don't feel it is 13 years in the making great. What I think has annoyed me the most about this is that they have the cheek to charge a small fortune for the album (Physical version) and you don't even get the full album!!!! I've got a code for a video I don't even want, I'd rather have a download code for the rest of the album.
Rant over, I'd give the album maybe a 4 if it wasn't for the crappy way it has been put out. Incomplete for mega dosh, I don't think I should now have to go on to iTunes or such to get the missing tracks (Before people start I know they're sound scapes and not tracks.)

An excellent deluxe book reproduction of the original edition, complete with CD and extra art!

Fantastic book release. Don't get me wrong, I have the original deluxe edition which is gorgeous, but the book edition is simply far more a convenient presentation for the shelf and regular use. Yes, there are some more wonderful extra pages to explore, and rather than a built in screen, with this version there is a download code for the video.
On the downside while comparing editions, the new book release has only 7 tracks as opposed to 10 on the deluxe original, which admittedly are only short interludes but to me complete the record as a listening experience.
Also along with the download of the video, to help make up for a lack of HD screen, included a a small collection of 3D style lenticular cards featuring images from the video. Both CD and these cards have snug pockets to put them in near the inside of each cover of the hardcover book. In short: If I missed the first edition, I wouldn't have felt like I missed out with this release. Where it lacks, it gives more in other areas. A definite worthwhile purchase and listen.

Chatted to my mate on the release day about the album while listening to it for the first time - first impression was another "10.000 days" and then I fell into this special Tool mode where you just float away... Told my mate it's one of those albums where you should lie down in the high grass with a headset on, listening to the album and watch the clouds pass by. He said ..." I'm lying on the floor .... looking at the ceiling"
Like "10.000 days" it just gets better and better.
Do I like the expensive 'wrapping' ? Well, I guess I do - but it a bit costly.
