I have liked Cold War Kids since their 2006 debut, and I continue to like them. But, "New Age Norms 1" isn't their best work, and this is nothing new. They have released albums in the past that I wasn't to keen on, but they have released good ones too, like their 2017 album, "L.A. Divine".
Each one of their albums has some good songs on them, and this album is no different. I found myself liking "Complainer", "Beyond the Pale" and "Dirt in My Eyes" to be the best of this lot. The rest are serviceable, if unmemorable. I look forward to "New Age Norms 2" and hope more thought and care is put into it.
Here's how "New Age Norms 1" compares to the band's other works:

2013 Dear Ms. Lonelyhearts: Three Stars
