I'm looking forward to pool & Beach wear!
First, some context: we were going on a vacation and wanted some water shoes that would hold up to tidepools and hiking in similar wet rocky environments. We don't anticipate using them that often in the long run, so longevity/durability was secondary. We bought a bunch of different pairs to compare, but unfortunately, you can't really "test" them out in the real-world conditions they were designed for if you're planning on returning the ones you don't like. So I could only judge them on how well they fit and their grip on our bare floor at home.
Out of maybe 5 or so different pairs of water shoes we tried, the Merrells, surprisingly, were about next to last in terms of grippiness. And believe me, I still wanted to get these because I figured it will last longer than an off-brand, as it definitely looked and felt the highest quality of the ones we tried out. But since we probably won't be using these very often, the most important factor was being as safe as possible from my clumsy self, i.e. the grip factor.
When I took a closer look to figure out how a well-known brand could actually be more slippery than made-in-China knockoffs, one thing that set this apart was the very thin layer of "velvet" - or something like it - on the bottom of the shoe. I attached a picture showing where the "regular" water shoe sole material ends and this velveteen-like layer begins, circled in red. It was this material that caused the shoe to slide easily on a bare wooden floor, an effect similar to felt pads one might apply to the underside of chair legs. This seems completely counter-intuitive, so I can only think that perhaps this layer actually has superior grip when on wet rocks? Who knows. I wasn't really willing to risk damaging them if I was considering returning them.
I would definitely consider these if you think you may need water shoes on a regular basis and therefore need something that can take a beating over time. Obviously I didn't test it for that long, but it just felt better made than no-name brands, and it was also noticeably lighter. I bet it dries faster too. But if you want something basic for only occasional use, I think it's overkill, and possibly may not even provide better grip. By the way, I tried to look up information about this material and came up empty. I didn't see it on any of the other pairs we tried.
