It's very adjustable, it feels sturdy, the clamping power is very high (almost too high, actually, it's a bit of a pain to get the iPad Pro 12.9 in and out, but at least it's not going to fall out), and even if you don't use the desk clamp, the desk footprint is minimal and the base can have things placed on top of it. Personally, I put a HomePod under it and run the iPad audio through that.
It does shake quite a bit when using touch interfaces, so that's something to keep in mind if you're constantly touching your iPad as opposed to using it in Sidecar or with a keyboard and mouse; I think that's just fundamentally true of any similar design though.

For this usage scenario, the HoverBar is perfect. I see on their web site that they say you could use it while directly interacting with the iPad, such as for drawing or typing. I’m not convinced this would work well. The iPad jiggles a bit when attached to such a long mounting arm due to physics. Unless you have a non-adjustable arm, you are going to get some jiggle.
I saw some reviews saying that their iPad sags. You have to tighten the right screws so it won’t sag. The screw in question is the one in the back of the arm. If you tighten that, there’s no sag.
The iPad is held securely… I have absolutely no worries that it will fall out. I keep my iPad in a case that has a permanently attached cover. The HoverBar has no problems with the extra thickness.
What I would love to see with the HoverBar is a magnetic plate option — newer iPad Pros and iPad Airs have magnets on the back, and there are competing products (but shorter height) that permit the iPad to magnetically attach to the mounting plate for easy removal. Aesthetically they look much nicer than the HoverBar’s “sides” between which you insert your iPad.
The base has a plastic exterior, but it doesn’t look cheap. That said, it really should be metal at this price point. The inside of the base is metal, so the base has decent heft and weight, and there’s never a worry that the iPad will topple over.
Overall, a good buy. There are some cheaper options available — some of which look quite nice — but I indeed up going with this one because Twelve South is known to make good stuff, and I didn’t want to be in a situation where I had to return it.

I am really glad I went with this stand, but I am also glad I decided to buy it on sale from Amazon rather than directly from Apple. I needed something that would easily let me position the iPad at all kinds of angles. I am in a long distance relationship, so this is incredibly useful for video calls. I can easily position it on the side of my nightstand to make it feel like my partner is falling asleep right next to me.
I'm not sure if this is just an issue with my stand, but you are supposed to be able to tighten the screws on the arms for desired stiffness. I cannot tighten the first hinge anymore, but it is still drooping when the iPad being held closer to the base. Of course this is a more difficult position to hold with strength as the arm is also extended forward, so this might just be its limit.
I'll also say that the apple pencil holder is kind of pointless since the magnet is not very strong. I wish it was all flat on the base instead. Even then, they could put a stronger magnet to hold the flat back of the pencil in place. I suppose if you use a different stylus it might be helpful, but it's still not deep enough to hold anything firmly in place.
Why they couldn’t put in little knobs on these places instead, is beyond me. I used to have something similar in a desk lamp that had arms and could be clamped down, but also the arm angles could be infinitely adjusted. That was 30 years ago in college. You’d think that could be done today. But no.
So for as expensive this is, I give it one (1) star. Nice idea. Poorly executed.

I sent pictures and a description of what happened to Twelve South and they shipped out a replacement under the warranty. I was really disappointed when it happened, but I'm now just pretty impressed by the high-quality customer service.
