The Dreamer's Alliance series chronicles the challenges and dangers faced by Zachary Amstead and William Terrance, two men who have been gifted with and plagued by paranormal abilities. From their struggle to understand and control these powers through their battles with the attempts of corrupt authorities to either exploit their powers or eliminate them.

Set in western Pennsylvania, in and around the city of Pittsburgh, the first three books in this series play out over the course of five months. “Knuckleheads” literally takes place in one long day, as Zach walks his daughter, Abbie, through his childhood, where his and Billy’s strange and often dangerous abilities emerged, and their friendship formed.

In “The Evil You Choose,” Zach is forced to choose between helping a corrupt FBI agent, or a leader of an organized crime family. In order to bring an end to what he fears will be continuing exploitation, Zach enlists Billy’s help. He must also prevent the FBI from discovering Billy.

“When Evil Chooses You” Pits Zach against his most dangerous enemy. Grayson Dyer is the FBI Agent-in-Charge who will stop at nothing to avenge his father’s death. He holds Senator R. Madison Cutter responsible for what happened to his father, and he’s certain she was backed by the mob. Grayson wants Zach’s help. Without it, Grayson will eliminate Zach before he allows him to help his enemies.

Recently retired Zach Amstead is telling his adult daughter Abbie about his childhood experiences and those of his best friend Willan Terrance. Zach’s and Billy’s paranormal powers started to emerge. Billy began seeing shadowy glimpses of the future and Zach was beginning to participate in his lucid dreams. These abilities were beyond their capacity to understand, or control. Nor could they make sense of the world around them as these abilities began to become apparent to others, albeit not clearly.

Adults in authority in the nineteen sixties have no time for what they consider mental outliers of the baby boom. The boys are institutionalized, marginalized, and ignored. Zach’s father learns of the challenges they face as children and knows the dangers they will face as adults. With no way to comprehend how these boys perceive and move within their world, he must find a way to guide them.

Knuckleheads is the backstory to the trilogy that follows. It isn’t required reading, but many people have said in positive reviews of the trilogy that they were glad they read this book first. The two boys, grew up in the 1960s amid all of that decade’s advancements, awakenings, pop culture, and crises. Aspects of these various societal shifts affected these boys in different ways, and the effects are baggage that each boy carried into adulthood.

In looking back to the sixties, to the foundational environmental elements which are so important to the formation of the characters’ psyches, it is important to understand that this is the time in which the adult characters were boys. It is the setting of Knuckleheads. While some places in the setting are real, the events highlighted in this book are fiction, and they are presented here to provide a deeper understanding of these characters.

I never considered that some of the societal events and struggles which defined the sixties would reappear in the second decade of the twenty first century. The similarity between these otherwise disparate periods was not planned and I am not offering these stories as a commentary on any aspects of the twenty-first century.

If you are listening to the audio version, I hope you can pick up on Zach’s thoughts. In the print books, these small sections are italicized. The virtual voice pauses, sometimes, at these points. In any case, I think it reads or is being read fairly well.

If you like speculative fiction with a touch of technology, humanity and a bit of religion balanced by some sarcasm shared among family and good friends, you will enjoy this book.

The story was fading away until a young new reporter arrived in Pittsburgh. Rachael “Rascal” Todd was given some old stories to sort through and digs into the mysteries the police and FBI seem content to ignore. Rascal’s investigation brings her into the world Zach had left behind and new enemies surface as a result.

This time Zach and Billy must take a back seat as the timeline they started plays out.

Secrets, lies, crimes, social issues, a bit of romance, and the promise of redemption are all in play as Rascal Todd is launched into her career facing danger and learning lessons they didn’t teach in college. If you like character driven action, suspense, and a bit of mystery with strong women in leading roles, you will enjoy this book.

Zachary Livingston Amstead (Zach) and William Ignatius Terrance (Billy) have been best friends since they were in 4th grade. Billy sees glimpses of the future – his future, and to a limited degree the future of Zach and other friends. Billy struggled with this ability as a child. He was unable to distinguish between what was happening and what would happen in the future. Spent over 40 years in the Coast Guard. He’s an accomplished cook and a brilliant computer hacker. Billy roams the dark web as well as Zach roams his dreams.

Zach and Billy learned how to control their abilities and completed their careers with distinction. Unfortunately, Zach’s ability to participate in his dreams has been discovered by a corrupt FBI Agent – an agent who wants to exploit Zach to carry out an evil plot. The agent wants to destroy the political career of a prominent Senator, and he wants to ruin the life of the leader of an organized crime family in Pittsburgh.

Zach has to protect Billy from this agent, and Billy has to help Zach defeat the FBI. Throughout the series, Zach’s daughter Abbie and his brother Mike get involved and assist him and an oddly assembled alliance.
The books are told by Zach and Billy. They include suspense, intrigue, humor and a good deal of family snark.
