    I first saw this book in college in the 90s. It was in the original Japanese, but I had a translation. The preschool teacher I was working with read it to the class. I borrowed it and read it to my Creative Activities for the Developmentally Young class. It was a hoot! Now, it is a standard gift I give to new parents. It's a great way to teach and discuss an uncomfortable topic.

    PROs: This book has worked wonders for my 2.5 year old toddler. We started reading it to him a day before starting potty training (we put him in big boy underwear on a Saturday morning) and we read it several times a day during the next two to three weeks. He would request it (together with Julie Markes' "Where's the poop?") almost every time he used the potty, especially when he needed to - you guessed it - poop. I strongly believe that the story line and images helped him understand, verbalize and accept the whole process. What I liked in particular:

    - Simple graphics with bold colors: just the right amount of image and information on each page.
    - The story line flows logically and there's plenty of room for you to add your own sounds and gestures: be creative and it will amuse your toddler tremendously. You can use it to build up vocabulary. For instance, on the 'All living things eat...", name all the animals (lion, pig) and the things they eat (meat, acorns) and your child will soon repeat them back to you. Try to imagine together what the child on the same page is eating: is it your toddler's favorite foods or (sigh!) some of the foods you would like your toddler to eat.
    - My son liked to play a 'look and find' game to identity the poop on every page: for some reason, he found the snake page hilarious as he would trace the trajectory of food from the snake's mouth until it comes out as poop; he got better and better at following the snake's curves with his finger, which is great because soon after I started doing tracing exercises with him to prepare him for writing.
    - The flap on the last page where mommy says "Excuse me! I am making a poop! Please shut the door!". I used the same words when my son would try to follow me to the restroom and he did get the message after a while.

    (Faux)CONs: Be ready to read this with your toddler TENS of times. But as long as everything makes its way into the potty and you also have fun in the process, it is SO worth it.

    My son lost interest in this book about one month later, but baby # 2 is on her way and this will be cheerfully used again in a couple of years.

When the kids are starting to potty train, I'll get this book out and read it to them.     I bought this for my 22-month-old daughter right before we started potty training. I keep it by her mini potty and we only read it when she sits on the potty. She loves her “poop book” and it’s a nice tool to have while she’s learning to sit on the potty. Contains lots of pictures of animals + poop and also contains anatomically correct visuals of humans which is helpful too. Definitely recommend adding this to your collection of potty books, and would also recommend keeping it near the mini potty.

    I am a bit puzzled as to the negative reviews from Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal. Maybe the reviewers haven't tried to potty train kids. I have twin boys and when the first time I read this to them, one of them promptly pooped on the potty! They both love the book and have practically memorized it as have I. One still is more likely to poop on the potty if I read and/or hand this book to him to look at. Yes, some of the pages are inane (which end is the snakes behind? what does whale poop look like?) but my boys love it and it has been a great potty training aide (better than all of the other books we've tried) and remember, it is for toddlers, not adults. Yes, the pictures can be classified as "gross" by some but if you are potty training and that sensitive about poop, you have more to worry about than book illustrations. The blatant illustrations actually help explain what poop is and where it comes from (which comes as a revelation to many toddlers) and it makes poop an everyday topic, which it needs to be when potty training.

    My only criticism is that the book focuses on animals and human boys, NOT girls. One illustration has an outline of a boy's front without pants. Since I have boys, this isn't a problem. However, I could see this being less than helpful when trying to potty train girls...

    My daughter started holding in her poop after going through constipation at 18 months. We dealt with it for a whole year giving her movicol daily to soften her poop which was only way to get her to not hold it in.

    Since reading her this book, she's no longer needing Movicol and can poop solid poo without holding it in! FINALLY!
