Good story poorly toldDamini is about a rape case of a maid by household people and Damini trying to get justice for her. However, the whole way the movie story is told is ridiculous and insane and illogical. The whole nonsense about Damini being some girl who gets an impromptu marriage proposal by Rishi Kapoor was ridiculous and shouldn't have been needed. Her whole nonsensical backstory and her sister's plight was not needed.Repeatedly the movie tries to convey that a woman's place is with her father or her husband. This is really a bad message. Then the rape scene was egregious and over the top followed by the one thing which is very true - the villainous lawyer says "boys will be boys" and "which boy hasn't raped some women in their youth" and they all laugh as it is casually brushed off. People seeing this get the wrong message totally. Then Damini is very quickly in a few scenes in the court proved to be lying because she got asked a few ques and paraded with a few guys who have holi colors on them. She's somehow not only unable to recognize them but also apparently has a problem with colors and goes mad when she sees them. Except right now! when she saw all those people with colors which clearly indicates she is not mad but somehow the judge orders her to a mental asylum (lol, wut?) while her husband, family members and even her dad lies! Wow. Her dad lied as well for what? So she could be in the mental asylum for a few days? And then she gets tortured in the asylum brutally which is a horrible depiction of what actually happens there. It is like 0 research went into what actually people do.Then the maid is somehow killed in the hospital with no one observing that after many weeks/months and also has a convenient suicide note and no one bats an eye. This is followed by some drunk lawyer she happens to come across who is also secretly Jet Li and can beat up everyone of the baddies and takes on the case inexplicably as the main judges changes between scenes because they got a new "court date". What? Then some more dramatic nonsensical dialogs in court followed by the judge somehow ordering jail time for multiple people in the court despite no evidence nor cases being brought against them. The judge on his own decides to convict like a half dozen people including the lawyer on the spot and sends them to like 7 years in jail. No trail, nothing. Just straight up jail based on one testimony from the husband who previously lied under oath but now is somehow accepted as telling the truth. And absolutely nothing is done to the husband and he gets off scot free. And then the judge asks the court spectators to all clap because the new verdicts will be known as Damini law or something. This movie is beyond idiotic in its execution. The story is a good one, albeit a copy of Hollywood as most good Bollywood movies are, but very poorly shot, acted, directed and flowed. The Hollywood movie is called "Silent Witness".The problem of rape in India is pretty serious and this movie absolutely did nothing in the 1990s to do anything in terms of changing people's minds about the tragedy befalling women in India. Even 20 years later in 2012, a girl was brutally gang raped by a gang of 6 in a bus in Delhi and the worst perp was a 17 year old kid who got 0 jail time while the others got basically nothing. And she died a gruesome tragic death. And now, a decade later, women in India are getting raped at higher rate than 2012 when the Nirbhaya Jyoti Singh incident happened. This movie Damini was supposed to stir people and help with the problem of rape in India but it absolutely has had no impact on this other than the people involved in the movie winning some awards.India has become a hellhole for women, especially in north India, which has a crazy number of people and lack of education and crazy religious fanatics in govt as well crazy about a religion which supposedly teaches tolerance but these people are the most intolerant bunch.Overall, I thought the movie was supposed to have a good message but I failed to see the point of the whole movie as such. Not a good social Bollywood movie at all.0
