In 1983, the U.N. General Assembly created the World Commission on Environment and Development, an independent committee of twenty-two members, headed by Gro Harlem Brundtland, the Prime Minister of Norway. Designed to examine global environment and development to the year 2000 and beyond, the commission seeks to reassess critical problems, to formulate realistic proposals for solving them, and to raise the level of understanding and commitment to the issues of environment and development.
Rather than presenting a gloom and doom report about the destruction of natural resources, Our Common Future offers an agenda advocating the growth of economies based on policies that do not harm, and can even enhance, the environment. The commission recognizes that the time has come for a marriage of economy and ecology, in order to ensure the growth of human progress through development without bankrupting the resources of future generations.

'The volume is one of thorough analysis and passionate argument ... it contains much lively challenge ... essentially a specialist study which usefully avoids the exaggerations of ideology which have often bedevilled the whole debate on aid.'

Basis for the Agenda for the 21st century book.

Informative and Startling!
This is a book that you need to be careful to understand exactly what is being communicated between the lines- because rich and powerful people have been changing laws for years that are affecting all of us. This book has nothing to do with those who are changing the laws it is their insights and desires and accumlative research. You might want to write in a notebook while your reading this book and research the organizations and ideas the book discusses. This would give you a much clearer picture.
Lots of acronyms WHO, IMF, WWF, WMO WRI, So many there is a section in the beginning of the book to help you keep up. A lot of the information seems right and good, very good-
However, even though they have so many suggestive plans for they organizations who are involved, it left me with feeling, "Lord, what can I do to help. The world's in a mess, I want to help?"
I do agree with a lot of the information in this book- for instance, we don't need more weapons in the world- we need more humanity.
However, concerning food production, I don't think that it should be the United Nations responsibility to provide food for the world- this responsibility should fall to ourselves and our education of ourselves to garden more- to learn what is edible on our lands- to grow and cultivate fruit/nut trees and all these sort- But, now a days we have been getting out of school and not even a bit of knowledge of how to care for our needs- only to be able to work for the man or the mammon as some might say. Our agriculture education needs to be enhanced, greatly.
This book talks a lot about sustainable growth and of increasing the GNP of our economies - this would add more taxes to our government.
A wealth of information- you need to read it!

Appreciate the concise comprehension of sustainability interlocking multiple systems. It makes the Flint lead water crisis more real and requiring more complicated solutions.

I purchased and arrived timely. I have not yet read the book it is among my research for the summer, not to read but to follow up and review. We are a sovereign nation first and more goverment control equals less freedoms. Limited government not more...

Now I see what all these ridiculous terms stand for. It is all listed in great detail of actual sweeping nonsense. I love watching the foolish uncover their shame before us. Ecological bases for action, what lovely rubbish. Imperatives for action, based on innuendo & assumption, such a mock forum for actual folly. No wonder political science is a soft science. This production & all like it are a revelation of how brazen the proponents become for their ideas of sweeping reform. Who are they fooling?
Less you think they are buffoons, remember, they believe in themselves. Somehow, talk becomes fact, not reality. I had to see it to believe it. My suspicion is that these statements are crafted to become talking points to pull the shades down before the hypnotized eyes. How sad!
I paid 6 dollars for a used copy. It is barely worth any of that, but good to see its exposure.

This text was super boring. I HAD to read part of it for a class. I wouldn't waste your time on this book when there are much better ones available on the same subject.
