India is a country of extreme economic and social diversity, and the performances of Indian states in eliminating basic deprivations are remarkably disparate. This book, a companion volume to Dréze's and Sen's India: Economic Development and Social Opportunity (OUP 1996), draws lessons from this diversity through three case studies (of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Kerala) and two national overviews that look at socio-economic policy and demographic indicators.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Excellent Book

I liked the book. It gives a detailed account of conditions in UP, West Bengal and Kerala. Most of the point the authors cover are already covered in most of the Amartya Sen's books. I felt liked I was reading a repetition. Book is good for a lay reader. Lucid and easy to understand.
