I read a lot of nerdy climate blogs, and have a heavy undergraduate-level background in geological science, so I used this textbook to get a better understanding of atmospheric composition and dynamics. Without guidance, I found some of the graphs a bit obscure, and know that several concepts would be much easier to grasp with animation. (It didn't help that the older graphs had been converted from grayscale to color, without updating the descriptive legend.)

Since it's from 2009, I wouldn't use it as a climate change knowledge base, as the science has exploded in data and understanding in the past 5 years.

then goes into detail about the many aspects of the subject in words, graphics and tables. The book
requires serious work on the part of the reader--as any good textbook does. For the book to be useful
to the reader it requires basic under standing of several aspects of physics, chemistry, and geography.

I had high expectations for this book, based upon its authors' credentials and the table of contents. However, I have been very disappointed in it. Why? Because it's so hard to read! I am a person with a strong technical background in physics and math and can grasp just about anything. But this book irritates me to no end because it is written without any meaningful introduction to each chapter and section. It just repeatedly "jumps right in" to each topic with a deluge of facts and figures. It uses terminology and then explains that terminology 100 pages later. There are way too many typos. The authors confuse "logarithmic" variation of pressure with "exponential" variation of pressure. I wish the authors had taken the time to put this important material in context and to introduce important concepts and terminology along the way. As it stands, the book is basically a reference source on all the facts of weather and climate for someone who is already an expert in the field. I was hoping for a cohesive treatment of this important subject for someone who is not already an expert!

I've had the 6th edition of this book knocking around for many years but never plucked up the courage to read it. This new edition, with colour photography, colour diagrams and a revised text, is much more accessible than the earlier version. It's a superb book on a difficult and complex subject. The chapters are very well divided into categories on both different atmospheric mechanisms and how these vary according to geographical locations (tropical, polar, temperate etc). There's also a chapter on climate change which takes an appealing level headed view on the whole debate.There's a full bibliography and excellent chapter summaries.

It's not perfect and sometimes I really wanted to understand a process and found myself floundering on what I felt was insufficiently clear explanation. However this will be true of any book that attempts to bridge the gap between readability and high level scientific description.

Yet in all I think this is a great book and I would recommend it very highly.
