One of the best organic books I've read so far. I took organic chemistry years ago and have forgotten almost everything I learned in it. Or so I thought. The introductory chapters of this book beautifully condensed and refreshed me on the basics of organic chemistry that I thought I'd forgetten and made me understand it this time around - something I didn't do so well the first time. Althought the book is great, the condition it came in was sad indeed. I ordered the soft cover book since it was much cheaper. It was advertised as being in good condition. Imagine my (unpleasant) surprise when the book arrived with the front cover torn completely off - and stuck back on by two luridly yellow stickers e-campus stickers. Despite this, I am overall satisfied with my purchase.
Probably the best technical science book written on the subject. Schwarzenbach epitomizes the ideal of good technical writing. These kinds of books for students and professionals don't have to be dull as some might casually think of technical manuscripts. One will get the basic principles grounded in thermodynamics and kinetics here without the fluff in books that have the word "environment" in them. The trick of good technical writing is accessibility to readers using "story" development and syntax structure that keeps the reader engaged as they effortlessly assimilate the information.
Compared to the 1st edition this text is about twice the size. It is a monstrously large book. However, the book fails to teach the concepts in a clear fashion required when one is just starting in the field. Too much attention is spent to minute details that confound the subject. A great deal of space is used on deriving formulas.
It is without a doubt that the authors are exceptional minds in their fields, and have a fine understanding of the material. However, speaking as a student, they do me no favors in explaining what is going on. This text needs to be rewritten and edited to serve as a useful textbook for graduate students. Until then, the book will possibly be useful as a reference.
I bought this book years ago and literally have it open next to me right now as I write a manuscript. The tables and equations as well as the problems in the text are invaluable for anyone who studies/works in environmental sciences.
This is a decent text for introducing many of the concepts vital to the study of environmental chemistry. It is fairly in depth and easy to use. Overall a good text.
This book is the standard in environmental organic chemistry. It has good tables and is an excellent book for a class or to use as a reference for a professional. While a few of the chapters spend multiple sections on very narrow examples, that is the nature of the beast right now.
