I heard so many comments about Reagan's era, I wanted to learn more about it. I was a child for most of his Presidency and wanted to know more about why this leader is so revered. This book is written in his own hand, so I wanted to know his personal perspective. At first, I wondered if he had hired someone else to write the book or if it was penned in his own hand. In fact this book written by him. This book delves deeply into his opinion and thoughts on communism. He addressed communism with strength and integrity and refused to back down helping keep democracy alive and well. This book also gives you insight into times before he was President. I consider Ronald Reagan one of our greatest political leaders and Presidents of my lifetime, and this book is a wonderful piece of history that I now own in my personal library. This book helped me to understand how fortunate we were to have him as a President and leader of our country.

So Many Underestimated This Man

Throughout my life, almost all of my friends have been liberals, and if they were politically inclined at all, liberal Democrats. I remember well how so many people were shocked at the "lack of qualifications" for the presidency Reagan was supposed to have exhibited, forgetting that he was a two-term governor of the nation's most populous state. He was often thought of as an easy-going dunce, and it's certainly true that he took much of the nation by surprise when he won the presidency in 1980. This collection of radio addresses from the 70s illustrate his work ethic and his far-ranging intellect. "Talk radio" as we know it today had not been invented yet, but Reagan exploited the medium to maximum advantage in the 70s, in a mode perhaps pioneered by Paul Harvey. As a libertarian, I cheer his ringing defenses of capitalism and the free market, as well as his scathing critiques of the communist and socialist direction the world was taking in those years. I cringe to some extent at his social conservatism, and think that his insistence on massive defense spending turned out to be not as necessary as was thought, as Communism was bound to collapse anyway, but who's to say. The presentation of the book is fascinating as we see his crossouts and edits for each radio address. Here we see how the "Great Communicator" honed his gift to the point where he was able to claim the ultimate prize of the presidency. Well worth study for anyone who wishes to communicate ideas effectively to a general population.

A Great Example of Classic American Writing

This collection was recommended to me by a friend as a perfect example of the "American" style of writing. I believe Reagan is the last president to write the majority of his own public addresses and he does it masterfully. His strong prose clearly conveys his point without being too simple or too pretentious. As someone who wasn't alive during the Reagan presidency, I have gained a better understanding of a number of the events that happened during that time.
The editors did an excellent job of not editing, they include every revision and annotation. This is especially good for someone reading for the purpose of learning from a great writer's style. One can see how meticulously Reagan analyzed geopolitics with a keen intuition and American economics from the perspective of the common man.
Due to the nature of this book being a compilation of one to two page radio addresses and speeches, this book is easy to read in small pieces. This selection of Reagan's writings wonderful and I would [and have] recommend it to anybody.

This book is an excellent reference for getting into the mind of one of America's greatest presidents. Much of the book is write ups of his weekly radio addresses that he made in the 1970s. They are divided up into different topics and the index is helpful in finding a specific one. He talks about virtually everything you can imagine, crime, drugs, economics, politics, international affairs etc. All of the pieces are written before he was president which disappointed me somewhat. I wish there could have been some from when he was in office or after he was in office. The selections are easy to read and entertaining. There is a reason he was called 'The Great Communicator!" In addition to the political stuff they throw some miscellaneous humorous things in there as well. An example includes a creative writing piece that Reagan wrote when he was 14 and includes the grade.

The importance of this book is that it exists. Many to this day, still consider Reagan an amiable dunce, or an actor just reading what other more capable people wrote for him and doing what others told him.

This book proves them wrong. It proves that before he was president, Reagan was writing and delivering speeches almost daily. Speeches that he wrote himself on a wide range of issues of the day. It shows that his Presidency reflected HIS positions, HIS beliefs.

The collection of speeches are interesting. Reagan's style is interesting. I like seeing the original wording choices he wrote, and then his edits to the final speech. Always to convey an idea in a better way, not changing the idea.

It's hard to float this amiable dunce idea when hundreds of pages of Reagan's handwritten speeches prove that wrong.

I was 10 yrs old when Reagan was elected President. At the time I was aware only that my Grandparents liked him because he was the "Gipper". As I grew up I only vaguely followed politics so my knowledge of Reagan and his beliefs was only cursory. I really enjoyed reading this book. Reading the speeches and radio broadcasts that Reagan wrote himself was a fantastic way of learning what the man was truly about. I wonder how many presidential speeches since were actually written or even edited by the president. I came away with tremendous respect for the man in addition to his accomplishments as the leader of our country.
