Earth Logic: Elemental Logic: Book 2 Mass Market Paperback – June 13, 2005
A sweeping drama of war, intrigue, magic, and love
With Earth Logic, Laurie J. Marks continues the epic of her stunningly imagined world of Shaftal, which she first introduced in Fire Logic.
Shaftal has a ruler again, a woman with enough power to heal the war-torn land and expel the invading Sainnites from Shaftal. Or it would have a ruler if the earth witch Karis G'deon consented to rule. Instead, she lives in obscurity with the fractious family of elemental talents who gathered around her in Fire Logic. She is waiting for some sign, but no one, least of all Karis herself, knows what it is.
Then the Sainnite garrison at Watford is attacked by a troop of zealots claiming to speak for the Lost G'deon, and a mysterious and deadly plague attacks the land, killing both Sainnites and Shaftali. Karis must act or watch her beloved country fall into famine and chaos. And when Karis acts, the very stones of the earth sit up and take notice.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2024A wonderful continuation of Fire Logic. Like the other books in the series, there's a lot to unpack on every page. Lots of imagery and symbolism. Themes of colonialism, trauma, healing, community, diversity, and interdependence. The fantasy elements are really interesting and closer to humans as we are now rather than powerful wizards doing amazing inhuman feats. The characters are well developed and emotionally intelligent. What I love most about the whole series is that, rather than being yet another set of books about the folly of human beings, it imagines the possibility of something better. I'm usually a one and done type when it comes to reading books, but read the series twice in a row because I was so sad to leave the world and family that Marks constructed.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2016I just discovered Laurie J. Marks and---publishers take heed--I want to read more of her works. She creates a cast of complex and varied characters, puts them in impossible situations, and lets us watch as the characters either work their way out of the mess or suffer the consequences. Dialog and description are detailed so that I felt I was really present in her world. And even though the situation is often grim, happiness and hilarity often break through so that the reader doesn't feel they are sinking into quicksand. Read Fire Logic first, then this Earth Logic, and then Water Logic. I am still waiting for someone to publish what must be Air Logic but be assured that each book solves its own plot crisis even though the characters and overall situation continue through the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2012I am an avid reader ... and therefore know the difference between well-written and casual trash. This series was awesome. Consistent carry through from one book to the next without much review. Each one can stand alone but they are wonderful in sequence. Loved the theme of elemental nature carried to extreme. Loved the way the end resolved itself. I read one review talking about how it was a 'gay' book ... no ... it is a tolerant-of-all book. All kinds of relationships within this book series and if for no other reason than this, it is a welcome perspective. Terrific fantasy/science fiction/natural healing story.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2015Another great book in this complex and interesting series. Well written and lots of twists and turns.
When I reached the end of the book it felt like the series had been resolved and everyone was headed for their happily ever after but the author has made things way more complex than that. All the characters have finally had resolution so now it is time for some new characters and new complexities in the next book. These books are full of politics so they require your full attention to follow what is going on so don't expect too easy a read.
The only negative for me is the little "folk" stories embedded throughout. Somewhat like a lot of early American Indian legends, these did not add anything to the book for me at all. However, other readers will probably love these little tidbits.
There is a limited amount of action in this book and it is about peaceful resolutions and political resolutions so don't expect a lot of tactical planning or war games.
For me, one of the things I love about these books are the characters. They are all damaged so there is a lot of complexity to them that you don't find in a lot of books. Don't expect handsome hero's and beautiful heroines where everything just falls into place. Expect angst, pain, and true heroism.
Highly recommended reading for anyone who loves fantasy/adventure. Looking forward to book 3.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2019Somewhere I have the first 3 of this set of four....could not find it so ordered in paper AND Kindle. I had forgotten about the story and the logics, just remembered that I wanted the last one. Working through them now. Very good story that holds up well through the years. GET IT.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2015I love this series. (This book comes after Fire Logic.) I look forward to Air Logic, which would be the 4th in the series.
I love the Earth talent characters. They are powerful and humble.

VervadaReviewed in Italy on February 9, 20235.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous sequel
I've read over a thousand books according to Goodreads and the better part of those are fantasy of some kind so I can say that I've read quite a lot about magic. And yet there is something about these books that makes the magic seem even more magical, more mysterious and wonderful, the same feeling I had when I read fairy tales as a child. That happens while also describing the conflict between two peoples that has lasted for decades and killed thousands. I don't know how Laurie J. Marks managed to combine this two feelings: awe and dread, but she did it extremely well. At the end, after all the struggles, I was left feeling hopeful and what is more beautiful than that ?

While enjoyable I did not find myself as enthused as with the first.
I enjoyed the political leanings and slower burn. But found the relationship between the MCs to be frustrating if not outright undesirable. Which saddened me as I felt very close to them in the first book. I felt they fell into some over used and rarely emjoyable tropes.
As others have said I am not a fan of prophecy as a driving plot point and it was painfully contrived at points in this book, rather than a the more casual approach in the first.
I felt there was a good deal of natural tension in the story and the occasional moment of forced drama and cliffhangers (usually over a puddle rather than any metaphorical raging sea), we're unneeded and confusing at times.
I would suggest the author needs to stream line their approach to drama, avoid contrived plot points based on miss communication and self-interpreted vague prophecy--particularly if it's going to turn out incredibly literally. And work on making speech flow more naturally.
This book was riddled with spelling errors. Possibly from converting it to ebook format.
If you're looking for a generally entertaining story and aren't easily bothered by the things I've mentioned or, like me, quite like being critical and discussing books with your mates. Then I'd recommend them.

Thea RupprechtReviewed in Germany on July 21, 20175.0 out of 5 stars Absolut lesenswert!
S. PareReviewed in Canada on October 30, 20151.0 out of 5 stars and the fact it is always the man on man or woman on woman type of scenes also takes away from what could be a good book. I read
The author lost me with this book, the second in the series. I was willing to give it a go after the first book as the plot is somewhat interesting. However, I find the plot moves far too slow for me. I don't want to read a book where for the most part people are doing the same and acting the same and showing very little growth. That's not really my type of fantasy.
I also am not a fan of over sexualized books when it comes to the fantasy genre, and this book is heavy with it. I feel it happens more than it should, and the fact it is always the man on man or woman on woman type of scenes also takes away from what could be a good book. I read fantasy to get an escape into a rich world, but this book hasn't developed that enough. It focuses a lot on characters and those characters are boring.
Sorry I couldn't get past 50% of the book as it was a chore. Fantasy really shouldn't be like that...
