Some people spend their lives reacting to what life hands them, while others craft life to fit their goals. Author Phillip C. McGraw, who is a psychologist but describes himself as a strategist, is determined to make sure that his readers are the creators of their lives, not created by their lives. By accepting that you are personally accountable for every element of your life, McGraw says, you can erase the negative "epidemic behaviors" (found in all of American society: denial, false assumptions, inertia, deceptive masking) in your life and reach your goals.Written in a tough-love, sometimes cantankerous tone, this self-help book is not for those looking to explore their inner child or visualize away negative energy. No, this is pull-yourself-up-by-the- bootstraps advice from someone who's done just that. McGraw opens with a scene describing how he helped Oprah Winfrey survive--and win--the 1998 "Mad Cow" lawsuit in Texas, when she was having difficulty coping with the reality of what was happening to her. He helped her face the facts about the lawsuit, after which she was better able to participate in crafting a strategy to win it.McGraw first forces you to take a good hard look at who you are by dissecting your personality. It may be painful to realize that you fall into the "Porcupine" or "Perfecto" or any of the other personality types McGraw delineates, but here it's true that there's no gain without pain, because (Life Law No. 4) "You Can't Change What You Don't Acknowledge." He then describes in depth all 10 "Life Laws"--the rules by which the world plays--that he learned the hard way. Laws such as "You Either Get It, or You Don't," "Life Is Managed; It Is Not Cured," and "You Have to Name It to Claim It" make up the bulk of the book and McGraw's realist philosophy. If you learn and abide by the Life Laws and go on to create a Life Strategy, McGraw claims you will not only know yourself better and eliminate negative behaviors, you will also know how to reach any goal you set for yourself. --Stefanie Durbin

I think this is an excellent book to help you review your life and try to figure out why you are doing what you are doing so you can start trying to figure out how to change things. Life Lesson 2 - You Create Your Own Experience and Life Lesson 3 - People Do What Works we the big ones with me. My life is perfectly fine and even little quiet but I find that I keep creating drama that is 100% of my own creation over and over and that is a hard fact to face and even harder problem to resolve since not sure why I am doing it. For some reason causing little (but sometimes disruptive) drama in my own life works for me and I get some kind of pay off for causing myself trouble?! Working through the exercises in this book and the work book take time and a commitment. It could take a whole weekend to really do a good job of reviewing your whole like in the first chapter before you even get to the Life Lessons. However, I think this book is very helpful to people who have pattern problems like say procrastination to point of life disruption or yo-yo dieting that is more tied to other things like emotional eating than bad diet and lack of exercise or settling in life or hanging on to lingering anger or regrets that are long past their shelf life. Dr. Phil makes you really roll up your sleeves and take a hard look your past and current life so patterns start to emerge and reasons for why you are doing things that did not seem to obvious are now more clear. Once you have identified the patterns/problems, then you can try to solve them or learn more about them so you can start to heal. I think this book is designed to make the reader start accepting and examining the role they actually might play in creating problems and issues they think they have no control over. I think it is also really helpful for when you just really are not sure what is wrong with your life but you feel like it could be better and something is holding you back and needs to change but your are not really sure what to change or how. But like everything in life, you get little out of this if you put nothing in it. If you do not take the time to do the exercises and really examine your life then you will not learn anything and the Life Lessons might seem little to pat or general. But if you do the work then you might just wake up and realize that you "get it".

A review from the author of DREAMING YOUR REAL SELF: A PERSONAL APPROACH TO DREAM INTERPRETATION; and DREAM BACK YOUR LIFE: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO DREAMS, DAYDREAMS, AND FANTASIES.
Phil McGraw's LIFE STRATEGIES presents a no-nonsense approach to getting your life together and feeling good about yourself. But this is no easy "feel good" book with affirmations empty of action. His 10 Laws of Life remind us that having a good life (and a happy one) means taking responsibility for every aspect of it-including our attitude about our experiences and the wrongs done to us by others. Until we take control of our lives instead of talking about "someday," we stay stuck in our problems. I did not take issue with any of Dr. McGraw's "laws," nor with any of his examples. Well done. I'd like to see this book assigned in schools to fifteen-year-olds. His chapter, "A guided tour of your life," really gets down to the specifics people can use to get their lives on track.

The book is awesome, he is as straight forward, no nonsense even more then on his show. Now for the seller he sold the book as very good gently used, bah ha, someone went wild in this book from very other page highlighting and what really urges me these handwritten personal notes in between the writings and writing on that small empty strip with chicken scratch blah blah, this book should have never been sold the way it is. When I got the book I didn't look inside before I gave the seller a 5 star rating. Big mistake.
BUT DR. PHIL IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

I liked it very much, I am a Dr. Phil fan because he shoots strait from the hip so to speak. He tells it like it is. This book made me examine a lot of my experiences in life, why did they happen, what can I do to learn to be honest with myself and my choices. It is a good book. I recommend it for anyone who is old enough to have some life experiences, maybe someone who is having problems in their life because of the choices they have made but will not admit to their mistakes. Good reading. K.R.

This is a very good book for people seeking self-help, and also for mental health professionals to work through with their clients in psychotherapy. His ten "life laws" in particular, are resoundingly true, in my opinion and will provide basic understanding of what approaches to life's problems work, and what doesn't work. As a professional therapist and academic writer, I find that these Life Laws are useful, well thought out, and presented in an interesting, non-psychobable manner. The only drawback is that Dr. McGraw's narcissism shows a little at times - he is very certain that he is "right" and other approaches to building self esteem and healthy interpersonal relationships are not valid. It was well worth the read.

I think Dr. Phil gives us extremely good counsel, and I feel it is a privilege to own one of his books on life strategies. He calls it like it is: no sugar coating, no side skirting the issue(s). He has helped hundreds of people, and even if we are privileged enough to not have major problems, we can always learn more coping skills and this book provides that opportunity. Thanks for keeping it available for us!

This book is GREAT! In my opinion, it's the best life guide ever. It has so much helpful advice and things inside, and, it might be a little older and not as "new" as "Life Code". But, the premise and everything is pretty much the same, and the price is cheaper. I can DEFINATELY see why this was Dr. Phil's best book for about 10 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Personal Life Management Tool Guide

Glancing through the many 5 stars comments you will find enough reasons why to study this book and use the tools.

I want to focus your attention on a few specifics of this book: straight talk, dry, provocative, inspiring and convincing; emphasis on the freedom of choices in a world where more and more people claim there is no freedom, no free will; you find a simple strategy planning table to start with; reference to one of the most outstanding books in the area of life management: Man's Search for Meaning written by Dr. Viktor Frankl; on the pages 230-232 you find "Life dimensions and Categories" which you can tailor to your personal needs, chapter 13 provides you with 7 steps to acquiring your goals.

The author summarizes the top ten elements consistently present in the successful people he has studied.

For 9,99 Euro you get the wisdom of a true expert, for approx. 200 Euros you get an hour of an average coach with an unknown background. The decision is very easy. Go for your future Tool Guide to develop your "Life Strategies". You cannot start too early and it is never too late.
