The Civil War prison camp at Elmira, New York, opened on July 6, 1864, and closed the following July. During that single year, almost 3,000 Confederate prisoners died. The prison's death rate of nearly 25 percent was the highest of any camp in the North, compared to an average death rate of just over 11 percent in all Northern camps and about 15 percent in the South. Clearly, something went wrong in Elmira. Drawing on ten years of research, this book traces the story of what happened.

An Excellent Historical Work Involving An Important Time In Our History - Well Done and Worth Every Penny.

Author Horigan does his best to convince us there was a conspiracy by the North to retaliate against Southern prisoners at Elmira for the horrible treatment given Northern (Union) soldiers in Southern prisons, namely Andersonville. He has, nevertheless, researched this subject extremely well and presents a fair and full amount of factual information sufficient to enable the reader to reach his/her own conclusions, a rarity in many of today's writings. The book is very well written and extremely interesting to read, and I found it difficult to put down at times. Being a Civil War reader and collector, and from an area less than 20 miles from Elmira, it was especially important for me to read this and learn more about what happened there. There is not a better source, period. Thank you, Mr. Horigan, for all the time and effort you put into this project and for your objective presentation of evidence concerning a delicate subject which is important to so many of us.

Well researched book and a welcome addition to the literature. The question of whether or not the treatment of Confederate prisoners of war rose to the level of a war crime at Elmira, however, remains as controversial as so much else concerning the Civil War/War Between the States. One thing is absolutely clear after reading Horigan's book. Intentional or not, Elmira WAS a death camp. Five stars.

Mike Horrigan initiated my interest in the civil war many years ago when he first started his course on the Civil War prison camp in Elmira, New York. I ice skated on Foster's Pond as a child, which was in the middle of the prison camp compound. Being on the site of the camp during winter brings it home as to how the prisoners must have suffered there. Mike has done a masterful job at weaving his research in to a thought provoking tapestry. This is a very good read!!
