This is an absolute classic on the realities of European colonization, and so great that it is available in kindle. This should be on the curriculum of every school, a superb refutation of the "white man's burden" and those that still attempt to lionize empire and colonization. Walter Rodney was a shining light snuffed out by an assassins bomb far too young.

A classic indictment of Europe’s rape of Africa

Walter Rodney makes a convincing case that European colonial activities not only abused and exploited the peoples of Africa, but also did very little to “develop” their colonies beyond facilitating the exploitation process. It’s no wonder that African countries have struggled so much after achieving de jure independence. However, I have to take away a star because I didn’t agree with Rodney’s Marxist appraisal of various “communist” regimes like the USSR and North Korea, even though those countries were socialist in name only and would be better characterized as state capitalist. I also feel that the book being an older work meant that it had less to say on the current phenomenon of neocolonialism.

Overall, though, it is a valuable resource if you want to know how bad the old version of colonialism was.

This book really provides the connection between capitalism, enslaved Africans as capital and the modern economy and how it all emerged out of the natural progressions from feudalism. Very interesting. This should be read with Gerald Horn's book about the United States American Revolution and the counter revolution of the enslaved African's who in large part provided a major reason for the US's breaking away from the British. You really see how the victors get the spoils and get to define history.

Dieses Buch wurde Ende der 60er/Anfang der 70er Jahre geschrieben und zwar von einem der ersten Dozenten dessen, was man heute Black Studies nennt. Daneben ist Rodney ein Anführer in der Black Power-Bewegung und im Pan-Afrikanismus gewesen. Kurz vor dem Herauskommen dieses Buchs war unter anderem Martin Luther King Jr. getötet worden und im Rahmen der verschiedenen Widerstandsbewegungen gegen Rassismus und Segregation in den USA, in der Karibik, wo Rodney herstammte und auch in Südafrika und anderen Afrikanischen Staaten hat es wohl einen großen Einfluß gehabt.

Nach einer grundlegenden Einführung in die Thematik beschreibt er die Entwicklung Afrikas vor engem Kontakt mit der Europäern, den er ins 15. Jahrhundert legt und damit zu Beginn des Sklavenhandels speziell in Richtung der Karibik. Dabei sieht er den zuvor durch die Araber geführten Sklavenmärkte als nicht so historisch wirkungsträchtig. Die älteren Sklavenhandelserfahrungen - etwa zu Zeiten der Einrichtung römischer Kolonien speziell in Nordafrika (und damit auch eine primäre vorkatholische Christianisierung) findet eher keine Erwähnung.

Die Zeit des 15. Jahrhunderts sieht er als den Beginn des Wechsels von Feudalsystemen zu kapitalistisch bestimmten Systemen und das passt natürlich besser zu seiner marxistisch-dialektischen Grundhaltung. Na ja, Spartakisten werden es eohl nicht so viel lesen.

Als nächstes beschreibt er, wie Afrika zur Entwicklung des Frühkapitalismus im vorkolonialen Europa beigetragen hat, bevor dann mit dem Beginn des Sklavenhandels und der Kolonisierung Afrikas selbst dessen weitere zivilisatorische Entwicklung blockiert wurde.

Darauf folgt dann eine Darstellung der Afrikanischen Beiträge zur kapitalistischen Entwicklung Europas in der Kolonialphase, gefolgt von all den negativen Auswirkungen, die die Kolonialzeit, der Neo-Kolonialismus und auch die aktuelle Welthandelsstruktur (die in den 70ern nicht viel anders ausgesehen zu haben scheint, als heute) auf die neuerlich unabhängigen Staaten in Afrika, Asien und Lateinamerika gehabt haben.

Die Darstellungen sind sehr erschöpfend - in mehr als einer Hinsicht - und geben einem eine Menge Informationen, um auch die aktuelle Situation und etwa Chinas aktuelles Vorgehen in Afrika zu verstehen.

Die wirtschaftliche - und zivilisatorischen - Fortschritte gegenüber dem westlichen Imperialismus, die Rodney in der UdSSR, auf Kuba und in Nordkorea zu sehen glaubt, haben sich nicht in seinem Sinne eingestellt, aber davon abgesehen ist die Darstellung und ihre Systematik für eine Diskussion der Wirkung des Kolonialismus auf Afrika sehr nützlich. Man kann sich die Dialektik ja wegdenken.
