Surveys are a cornerstone of social and behavioral research, and with the use of web-based tools, surveys have become an easy and inexpensive means of gathering data. But how researchers ask a question can dramatically influence the answers they receive.
Sheila B. Robinson and Kimberly Firth Leonard’s Designing Quality Survey Questions shows readers how to craft high quality, precisely-worded survey questions that will elicit rich, nuanced, and ultimately useful data to help answer their research or evaluation questions. The authors address challenges such as crafting demographic questions, designing questions that keep respondents engaged and avoid survey fatigue, web-based survey formats, culturally-responsive survey design, and factors that influence survey responses. Additionally, "Stories from the Field" features provide real world experiences from practitioners who share lessons learned about survey design, and end-of-chapter exercises and discussion questions allow readers to apply the information they’ve learned.

However, the examples interspersed in the text are rendered in tiny (smaller than fingernail sized) rectangles in the Kindle edition. This is a huge problem because the examples are an important and often referenced part of the book.
I don't normally complain on Kindle problems because I can often squint or guess what it says even if the typography is a bit off. But these examples are literally unreadable.
The book is worth it anyway, but I'm saddened every time an example comes up because I just can't read it.

While not mathematically rigorous in the slightest, this is not a light and fluffy read. There is a ton of theory tied to experimental and social psychology papers. Actually, this took me a few weeks to read it because the amount of theory and also the authors are at times long winded.
If you are in the social sciences or a statistician who wants to learn about questionnaire development this is a must read. If you are in any other applied field (like marketing) this will be very valuable.
As another reviewer noted, this isn't a masters in survey generation. But what the author does is give you a place to start. You get the basics of how to construct good questions that will get you the feedback you need, and avoid annoying the customer or generating feedback that just doesn't mean anything.
I think this deserves five stars - just remember that it's an introduction to the topic, and that people spend years learning to do this well. This will get you started.
