Nicely written, completely fell apart after 3 uses

This is a well-written and practical guide to research methods (quantitative and qualitative emphasized). It is not well edited and there are many typos, misspellings, and mislabeled tables. Most importantly, the book fell to pieces after just a few openings. The center section of the book came loose completely and I have to use a binder clip to finish reading the last 3/4 of the book. It was basically a loose-leaf book by the time I finished the semester. I did not treat it badly, it is just not well-bound. Be ready for that. Otherwise, a nice book to learn from and reference.

The academic field of research methods describes how different approaches to research can yield insight and results. Historically, quantitative (i.e., numerical) approaches have dominated. Recently, qualitative (i.e., descriptive in words) approaches have increased. Also recently, mixed methods approaches have combined the two to tell interesting stories more expeditiously. In this work, Creswell and Creswell delineate all three methods and help the reader make the most of their research efforts.

The fact that this book is in a fifth edition speaks to its strength and staying power. Copious references to the literature adorn its text. In addition, concepts – like putting interventions into action through, say, social-justice or feminist perspectives – are covered concisely yet in detail. Newer, activist approaches provide ways for research to reach outside of the so-called “ivory tower.”

Examples of the concepts in action are provided through boxes that illustrate the concepts. The text gets to the point and does not ramble. As such, the reader can transit efficiently from ignorance to knowledge to action. From the examples, one can easily transform this information into a robust product of writing. Useful strategies like concept-mapping and coding are also exposited and help the reader grasp how to gain further insight into their field.

Obviously, those engaged in research efforts are targeted by this work. It is appropriate for graduate students, teachers, and researchers of many stripes – especially in medicine, education, psychology, and the social sciences. It provides a helpful way to structure their work. It is accessible and readable enough that anyone engaged in critical inquiry can gain from this work. One does not need to be a Harvard professor to appreciate the Creswells’ contribution… though Harvard professors, too, might appreciate their clarity and erudition!

Oh, if only I had known this book existed a couple of years ago! Creswell and Creswell cover the practical nuances of thesis writing in such a clean, simple, and thorough way that I actually couldn't put the book down and read it cover to cover in a day (okay, I may have been procrastinating too). I have a number of chunky, up-to-date research textbooks but this is definitely the best one I've encountered yet. It focuses on qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method approaches and caters with clear examples of each throughout the research process. I think though that it is the coherence and inclusion of nuanced areas of research writing that elevates this title above so many others. I usually end up searching (unsatisfied) for specific term clarifications in textbooks, but this title just makes everything so clear that my confusion around commonly synonymously-used terminology (yet not synonymous actually) has evaporated. I often feel that headings and sections are ridiculously repetitive but this book actually helps by explaining the purpose and structure of each section. So ... my supervisor is going to get bored reading my '(Cresswell and Creswell, 2018)' references, but I'm super chuffed with them. The fact that they also include explanations for (basic) statistical analysis is a big bonus. The only area I would have liked a little more inclusion of is critical realism, as it seems to have been missed under philosophical positions, but I would definitely recommend this title to anyone engaged in research.

This text is great for introduction to research. Good sized font, relatively easy to read. I’m using it for my NURS 512 and 513 courses and it works. Downside to the very beautiful cover is that it easily wears. The paperback version definitely bends, separates, and does not take a student beating from use. I foresee it lasting me the year (and I take good care of my texts), but seems easy to fall apart. I wonder if it would be different if it were hard cover.
