Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Used as a reference by students of acupuncture, this is a hefty, truly comprehensive guide to the theory and healing power of Chinese medicine. It's also a primer on nutrition--including facts about green foods, such as spirulina and blue-green algae, and the "regeneration diets" used by cancer patients and arthritics--along with an inspiring cookbook with more than 300 mostly vegetarian, nutrient-packed recipes.

The information on Chinese medicine is useful for helping to diagnose health imbalances, especially nascent illnesses. It's smartly paired with the whole-foods program because the Chinese have attributed various health-balancing properties to foods, so you can tailor your diet to help alleviate symptoms of illness. For example, Chinese medicine dictates that someone with low energy and a pale complexion (a yin deficiency) would benefit from avoiding bitter foods and increasing "sweet" foods such as soy, black sesame seeds, parsnips, rice, and oats. (Note that the Chinese definition of sweet foods is much different from the American one!)

Pitchford says in his dedication that he hopes the reader finds "healing, awareness, and peace" from following his program. The diet is certainly acetic by American standards (no alcohol, caffeine, white flour, fried foods, or sugar, and a minimum of eggs and dairy) but the reasons he gives for avoiding these "negative energy" foods are compelling. From the adrenal damage imparted by coffee to immune dysfunction brought on by excess refined sugar, Pitchford spurs you to rethink every dietary choice and its ultimate influence on your health. Without being alarmist, he adds dietary tips for protecting yourself against the dangers of modern life, including neutralizing damage from water fluoridation (thyroid and immune-system problems may result; fluoride is a carcinogen). There's further reading on food combining, female health, heart disease, pregnancy, fasting, and weight loss. Overall, this is a wonderful book for anyone who's serious about strengthening his or her body from the inside out. --Erica Jorgensen

My acupuncturist told me about this book and it is amazing!! So much information, I refer to it all the time. I love having the nutritional healing answers at my fingertips. I believe food is medicine so it's important to have the right information and this book delivers. If you can't afford a natripath or acupuncturist (like the boat I'm in now) this book is vital to helping me heal myself naturally.

This book is informative. I would recommend it for someone who is looking into a more natural method of health. I do NOT use it religiously, but I use it as an informative guide. I have read others that didn't make as much sense as this one. This one tends to have a broader coverage of a knowledge base. It is not the "quick fix" method, just a general source of good information. (Quick fixes can get you into more trouble than they help.)

A must have to add to your research warchest this has it all from Apple cider vinegar cocktail explanations to plant based uses of food to heal our bodies it so thorough yet concise. All without being over the top complicated.

This book explains problems in terms of hot and cold which is very big in my Indian culture. I was looking for something similar to how my mother and grandmother looked at the warm/cold properties of food and how they effect your body. I have tried many remedies in this book for me and my family and they have worked great. I.e. period pains, burns, constipation, fatty liver disease.. This is a great reference book to have on hand if you like trying natural remedies.

I bought this book while working with an acupuncturist whom called it "the Bible". It's true. I have learned so much about whole foods and Chinese traditions. It puts a whole different perspective into view about what causes and treats ailments. I use what I learned from this book almost every day. It's also helpful in working with people in my family whom suffer from excessive heat or cold conditions.

This can be overwhelming for some. Useful for students who are interested in eastern knowledge and healthy alternatives.

Couple things bother me bout this book. Huge book weighs a ton some info Greek to me. Great reference book think it will come in more handy the more I learn bout whole foods.

5.0 out of 5 stars An must have book to understand how food can heal/improve many medical conditions
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 24, 2024
So many medical conditions are the result of the foods we eat damaging us, and the foods we ignore which could heal us. This book has helped improve my health by treating the cause of my gut issues and enabled me to bin my medication which was only treating the symptoms of them. Highly recommended for everyone wanting to heal themselves and get back to eating the wholesome foods that are great for our body and maximise our nutrition... rather than mass-market, highly processed foods whose goal is to maximise company profits.
