Using case studies of five countries (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Peru) this text provides a realistic analysis of the situation concerning child work in Latin America. In particular it looks at the legal and political aspects relating to economic necessity. The case studies suggest solutions to combining the need to work with the right to education. The self-perpetuating nature of child labour and poverty is indicated and the need to actively encourage families to regain faith in schools and education is underlined. The work reveals that actual policy and practice ofton fail to link child labour and basic education, dealing with these as two separate entities. Instead, suitable reform of the latter should help to reduce the former. Specific long, medium and short term policy recommendations are made in conclusion such as the reduction of adult under-employment and unemployment; radical and qualitative changes and reform of education in the region; increased research into awareness of vulnerable and invisible groups and occupations, for example domestic girl workers and apprentices.
