This study assesses the long-term technical and economic potential of new energy technologies. Future energy security rests on the successful development and market deployment of new and improved energy technology options: advanced technologies for clean coal conversion and use, improved natural gas transport, enhanced hydrocarbon production, extensive use of new renewable energy resources, advanced nuclear fission power systems, nuclear fusion feasibility, environmentally sound electricity production and demand-side management, clean car technologies and alternative transport fuels, and technologies for more efficient and flexible energy use. This study identifies R&D options and priorities that governments of IEA countries may wish to consider for their energy programs, and recommends increased industry participation and enhanced international cooperation in new energy technology development.
