This volume explores the evolution of United Nations efforts at peacekeeping, particularly since the early 1990s. Peacekeeping has always been one of the most visible symbols of the UN role in international peace and security. Disappointment with the performance of UN peacekeeping operations became symbolic of the UN's failure to emerge from the ashes of the Cold War as a rejuvenated key player in international and, increasingly, internal peace and security. United Nations Peacekeeping Operations reflects some of the thinking, some of the experiences in the UN and in the field, some of the frustrations, and some of the hopes of this past decade. It combines academic analysis, field experience, and reflection with forward-looking proposals for more effective peace operations designed and deployed by the UN in partnership with regional, sub-regional, and local actors. Ramesh Thakur and Albrecht Schnabel have edited an extremely interesting and thorough source on UN peacekeeping operations in the post-Cold War era. As we commence a new century, the challenges the UN faces in addressing peacekeeping and world peace in general, have changed dramatically since the creation of the UN in the aftermath of World War 2. In the post-Cold War era, the increased tempo of peacekeeping operations have presented the UN with a considerable amount of issues to consider.

The editors examine the 'six generations' of UN peacekeeping, as they see it: Traditional peacekeeping; non-UN peacekeeping; Expanded peacekeeping; Peace enforcement; Peace restoration by partnership and finally, multi-national peace restoration.

The editors are joined by an eminent panel of authors discussing such challenges as: violence in ethnic conflict; the role of the UN Secretariat; Policing; Regional peacekeeping; peacekeeping in Africa; capabilities of regional peacekeepers; civilian police in UN peace operations and the challenges the UN faces into the future; especially since the release of the 'Brahimi Report' on UN peacekeeping operations, in 2000.

This book is an excellent reference source for anyone undertaking studies of UN peacekeeping operations since the end of the Cold War, as well as historical research into those various peacekeeping operations. The panel of authors consist of academics amd former military and police senior personnel who have had experience in UN peace operations. The book also has an extensive list of source documents contained in the notes at the end of each chapter.

In summary, a well researched and written book on UN peace operations, authored by a respected selection of experienced writers, with an extensive reference list. The book is well suited to students of recent UN peace operations and provides substantial material for any student. This book was published in 2001 and a second edition ten years on, would be great to see. Well done to the authors and editors!
