This book has come out in a crucial time in human history where the world is witnessing great changes in the global politics after the events of September 11, 2001. The shadow of war is threatening not only Iraq but also many nations all over the globe. At this dark moment in our history we need to remember the call for peace as a core message of all revelations; a call that was at the essence of the revelation to Prophet Muhammad. While this book carries the Islamic call to its universal dimensions, it does not do that out of an ethnocentric spirit. The book examines the concept of Islam in its broadest sense. This examination came from a systematic study of the Quran, and the sayings, and deeds of the Prophet. It shows that Islam is an approach to life where body, mind, heart and spirit are balanced.
The book covers a wide area of subjects, ranging from the abstract level of discussion in relation to how to define "Islam" and how it confirms and explains other revelations, to a practical level where the conflicts between the spiritual and profane dimensions of human life are resolved through Islams guidance, and the balance between divine teachings and practicing every day life is achieved. The paradox that recurs whenever Islam is mentioned in relation to how Islam as a religion for peace, used the sword to conquer its enemy, is discussed thoroughly, and the authors show the erroneous methods that some orientalists and also some Muslims tend to follow.
The authors reading of Islamic teachings is one where Islam is viewed as a reminder of the basic principles that guide humans to make the best of their existence. All revelations share with Islam the same message. Accordingly, "Islam" does not require followers of other revelations to convert to its system of worship or legislation. As a result of asserting the oneness of humanity, "Islam" only guides all to come to "common terms". A balance between feelings of commonality and respect for diversity would enhance peace, tolerance, justice and cooperation among all people.
