Ladies in the Comic Book World

Harley Pryde "Femzy"
The list author says: "*This list is a work in progress*
I made this list for others to experience an amazing female writer, artist or character. I often struggle finding titles that have strong female characters (mainly because many are written by men) or have been created by women. Sure, there are many women in comics these days, but I want to enjoy amazing women writing, drawing, and appearing in comics. In addition, I prefer to read about women who are redeemed by knowledge, not love. Harley Quinn is my favorite all time character, but she is in no way a worthy of being on this list. She is a lovefool and a twit.
None of these selections are child-friendly. This makes me upset because strong positive female role models in young girls lives are essential!"

"Gail Simone is one of the greatest female writers around. She exposed comic book professionals for the indignities that occurred to their female characters (brutal deaths, idiocy, abuse, tormented relationships). In Secret Six (a continuing title), she introduces Scandal Savage, the most well-done female who identifies as lesbian in DCU."

"Yea, yea. Those of you into comics are probably thinking, wtf? The Filthy Assistants are amazing! Gender roles have been turn upside in this book making it a must have for me!"

"Not done by women, but Spider-Woman is a great female character whose inner monologue feels much like my own :)"
Planetary VOL 01: All Over the World and Other Stories

"Again, not a very obvious pick. Jakita is one of the most versatile female characters in comics. From her heritage to the way she fights, there is no stopping her from finding out the truth!"
Oracle: The Cure (Batman)

"Oracle is the best! She perseveres and keeps getting smarter and more strategic despite her disability. Her work with the Birds of Prey is also notable."

"What would life be like without Tulip? Such commitment and strength is rarely seen in a female character. This book is pretty violent although it is well worth reading for her story."
