Creative Science writing

D. Becker
The list author says: "Reviewing "The Lives of a Cell," by physician Lewis Thomas, in the 1970s Joyce Carol Oates remarked, "Anticipates the kind of writing that will appear more and more frequently, as scientists take on the language of poetry in order to communicate human truths too mysterious for old-fashioned common sense." Three decades after this prediction, and it is saddening that the frequency of literary science writing has not increased exponentially since Thomas's time. Popular science has emerged as the more dominant form of writing about science, but the goals of popular science and those of the science essay are not identical -- the former seeks to communicate, educate, and entertain, while the latter aims for the artistic and the expression of self and experience. This list is a in-the-works compilation of works of fiction and non-fiction, some by scientists and some by others, who seek to write about science in a way that appeases both aspects."
