The list author says: "Some books are just mind-blowingly different - because of a great unique "what if" premise, a unique perspective, an usual concept turned on its head or a heck of a believable surprising ending. For some reason, there's a lot of lists of movies like this - generally they include "Memento", "The Usual Suspects", "The Truman Show","Eternal Sunshine of the Mind" and "West World" ---to name a few. But. there's not a lot of lists for books. So here are some of mine:"
"An amnesiac woman who has to be reminded each day who she is, who her husband is, etc.starts keeping a secret journal under the guidance of a man who claims to want to help her. Suddenly she's aware of the lies she's being told. Who can she trust? Why are they lying to her? What really happened to her? And can she reclaim her life?"
"This is another very different sort of thriller (and one probably geared more towards women). A woman's sister dies and police conclude it is a suicide. Her sister doesn't believe it and pursues finding the true killer - while coming to term w/ relationships in her family. It's done w/ a unique approach and a unique type of twist that will definitely surprise."
"Don't let the latest not-so-good movie version of this stop you from reading it. It's really one of the best psychological suspense (not horror, scary) books I've ever read. In it, U.S. Marshalls visit an army mental facility where things may or may not be as they appear. They investigate a missing certifiably-crazy woman, and it has a mind blowing ending."
"Turns the cliched alien abduction completely on its head. In this world, peaceful alien "souls" are taking over humans. But, Melanie a human refuses to leave room for her "soul" and they must work together. A wonderful "what if" premise."
"You won't see these twists coming! (I'm saddened this has gone 'off-market' since I developed the list - find it somewhere if you can!) Otherwise, it's liable to show up as a poor movie version of it."
"In this world, a group of people born with violet irises are able to channel the dead. The heroine is one of those, and used by the government to channel murder victims in criminal trials of murderers. This first book was so successful it has spawned a series."
"Along the same lines - yet completely different from 'Through Violet Eyes'- is this one, which is one of Koontz's best. Odd Thomas the hero is indeed odd, and he has conversations with ghosts who haven't yet passed along. They alert him to a big problem for the community and the rest of the wonderfully odd characters."
"All the fairy tale characters ends up in NYC, hiding from an evil adversary in this adult fairy tale re-telling. But, the story is really about the Pied Piper and Peter Piper - and they have a bigger tale to tell than what you'd thing from the nursery rhymes."
"Whether you love or hate the characters - this novel which switches between two possible fates with masterful deftness will still leave you thinking. Reminiscent of "Sliding Doors" the movie - and well-worth the length just for the thoughful execution."
"What was really going on with that Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz? In fact, what was really the deal with the whole land of Oz? This fabulously adult re-telling of the classic as a political thriller is a definite mind-blower."
"Max is born with old physically, but young mentally - then grows progressively wiser, but younger physically - with 3 chances to capture the love of his life. Well-written with shades of "Dorian Gray" in this mind-blowing premise."
"Bet you don't figure this crime thriller mystery - even though all the clues are there. It's a nice roller coaster ride of twists and turns along the way - but at the end it's a mind-blowing ride of twists and surprises - you might just should have been able to see coming!"
"In a not-so-distant future most women are infertile. But those that are fertiLE are forced to be "handmaids" as breeders for the elite. This is the mind-blowing tale of how that world came to be from the perspective of Offred, a handmaid."
"No list of mind-blowing unique concepts would be complete without a couple of classics from the master. Even if you saw the movie, you'll be amazed at the tale (and the differences between movie and book)."
"If you've only seen the movie - you've missed the best of this mind-blowing tale. Deeper characters and the true chaos theory behind it make the book not just scary like the movie - but a real mind-blower."
"In an unusual approach, each chapter of this book is a session with a psychologist as a woman who escaped from captivity tries to rebuild her life and searches for the reason she was kidnapped in the first place."
"What if you were born only because your parents needed a blood and organ farm to keep a sibling alive? A novel that covers all of the shades of gray in this situation, and surprises you along the way."
"What a great roller coaster ride of twists and turns based on a unique concept. A serial killer runs amok during the Stalin reign, and while one man pursues it - his country doesn't want him to discover the truth!"
"Written for young adults, but one which anyone will love. This is a more high stakes and complex predeccesor to the "Hunger Games" - with a huge twist ending. Ender is forced to combat his peers for survival and thrust into a dystopian reality, Ender faces one challenge Katniss lacks - an outside threat posed by aliens."
"Though written for young adults, this dystopian society which has spawned a series will draw anyone in. The characters are drawn into a creative, government run reality "survivor" game - which only one person can win."
"Told from the perspective of a charming and immoral sociopath as he ingratiates himself into the life of Dickie, this a psychological mind bender. Though the movie was good, there are many differences that still make the book well worth a read!"
