The list author says: "One could probably find a realitevely decent, used DSLR camera / lens package for about $300 that in the hands of the right person, could create pictures that shame those produced by a rank amateur with the likes of a Canon EOS 1D or any other high end, high dollar camera for that matter! Why? Becasue the most important thing to good photography is composition of the shot. So, before you start to peal off the greenbacks for an expensive rig, invest in a decent photography 101 type of book, or even two or three of them. It'll pay dividends in very short order!!! And most likely serve as a good reference as you continue to hone your skills. Once you have decided and acquired your camera, invest in a decent book dedicated to the specific make and model ...more great reference material to help you continue to get the most out of your gear.
Nevertheless, I'm a CANON guy - always have been, always will be! I have the XSi and am aspiring to the 5D Mark II although I feel in my bones that Canon is going to be replacing it in the not-to-distant-futre; and no, I don't have the inside track to what the people at Canon are doing or even planning to do, I simply think it's time. So, while I wait on a hunch, I have been building my hobby up by investing in the lens and other ancillary gear like filters, tripods, flashes, etc...
About my lenses and granted, they are all high end glass, but I'll have them a lifetime since I already know that my interest and love of photography as a hobby is not a short lived endeavor. Also, it should go without saying that the lenses I use are all made by Canon ...of course!
Now, without further delay, here is what you'll find in my camera bag:"
