The list author says: "When my son began reading at 4 years old I wanted to fill his world with books- but what I found is that many of the young reader chapter books had content that was too scary or overwhelming for a 4-5 year old. Many chapter books began the story with dead parents I.e. Harry Potter, Roald Dahl, Mysterious Benedict Society, Lemony Snicketts, etc. Another common theme is a beloved pet dying or getting lost. After seeing the musical "Annie" and the storyline of an orphanage was hard for my sensitive kid- I knew 10 pages into Harry Potter he wasn't ready despite the fact he really wanted to read the series.
Here is a list of boys books I found suitable content for MY 5 year old - And challenging and interesting for him- without any dying family members or dying pets.
Many of these books have a lot potty humor which I am fine with but some parents wouldn't want their 5 year old reading."
"At 41/2 these were the first books my son read independently and read them over and over. It inspired him to draw his own cartoons and he sent some to the author Dav Pilkey who not only returned his letter but sent personalized hand drawn cartoons"
"These are fun colorful pages- different fonts and likes of pictures and mice jokes. But they follow a formula and after he read 2 books he figured out the predictable plot and he was done with them- but he liked the first 2."
