The list author says: "I've moved so many times (10) during my adult years that I've pretty much perfected the process by now. (At least I like to think so :-D) I have a growing collection of all my best moving tips that I like to share with others who are moving."
"We own these. My husband doubted that they would work. That is, until we had to move our washer & dryer from our old house to our new house recently! He now recommends them to his friends. These straps REALLY balance the load, and make a super-heavy item fell SUPER light!"
"We own this convertible hand truck/dolly and we LOVE it. We got it for our most recent move and can't figure out how we did all of those other moves WITHOUT it. It's really heavy-duty. And it's amazing how many times you truly need to use both of the configurations. This one is SO handy!"
"You can't move without clear packing tape. Period. This stuff comes in handy to keep flimsy boxes together, to seal lids to their boxes, to combine similar items together (in a box, or out of one). This 2-inch packing tape also makes a good impromptu labeling system as well! Just use a black Sharpie to write directly on the tape."
"We definitely could NOT have done all our moves without these wardrobe boxes. We hang most of our clothing (shirts, pants, dresses, suits, coats... everything). So these boxes made moving them from the closet to the moving truck a cinch! The best part: these boxes are completely reusable. Ours have survived 3 moves already!"
"Not only is this handy when you're moving, but it's also a wonderful thing to have around at home AFTER you move. It's great for scooting heavy things from one room to another or from one corner of the garage to another. Or, you can use it to keep things off the floor temporarily. If you toss a flat board over it, it can be used to move smaller items as well."
"I use packing peanuts for smaller, more fragile items that I pack together in a box -- like knick knacks and small decorations. That way, the tiniest pieces and parts don't even come close to getting damaged, even when the boxes get bumped around a bit."
"I did my first few moves without one of these handy gadgets. Never again! Today, i have 2 tape guns in at all times. They make sealing up boxes SO much easier and faster. Plus, I use my tape gun around the house all the time too -- especially when I'm packing up gifts to ship to others, selling things on eBay, etc."
"Our first couple of moves, we didn't use a mattress bag like this. As a result, our mattress got all banged up and even ripped in one corner. Not to mention the fact that ALL moving trucks are completely filthy inside, and the mattress seems to pick up everything - yuck!"
"If you don't want to use the big tape gun (which I HIGHLY recommend), this is your next best option. It's the same size packing tape, but there's a smaller tape-cutter attached. It works pretty well too."
"Stretch wrap is different from carpet protector (below) in that this stuff isn't adhesive in anyway. It merely sticks to itself. It's great for wrapping the cushions of your sofa in place, so you can move it in one piece. The same with chairs. Or, you could wrap the swinging doors of a tall cabinet hutch closed -- and things like that."
"This thin plastic carpet film was a lifesaver on our last move! We lined our carpeted stairs w/ it before moving the washer & dryer down those stairs (on a dolly) -- so there were no grease marks or muddy movers' shoe prints left behind. We also lined all carpeted areas in front of the doors with it. It's low-tack, rather than highly adhesive, so it stays in place just long enough."
