Donizetti Opera

The list author says: "Here is a list of Donizetti's best (well in my opinion anyway). I have excluded "Don Pasquale" because it irritates me and "La Favorita" because I can't find a decent recording (would have been nice if Verrett and Pavarotti had gotten together to take care of this problem back in the 1970's--oh well)."
Lucia Di Lammermoor

"To me this is the better of Sutherland's two studio "Lucia's." She is in fresher voice yes, but also she is much more aggressive and energized in her singing. She is helped along by Pritchard, whose tempos are consistantly faster than Bonynge's. the only downside is that Cioni although certainly no slouch, falls far short of Pavarotti in the closing aria."

"Sutherland's interpretation here is more refined but rather tame (as if she's holding back) when compared to her earlier studio outing.  The male cast is outstanding. Unfortunately, Bonynge takes it a little too slow for my taste and I frequently find myself dozing off despite the beauty of the performance."
Donizetti: La Fille du Régiment / Sutherland, Pavarotti, Malas, Sinclair, ROH Covent Garden, Bonynge

"One of Sutherland's best performances on disc if not the very best (barring famous recital albums of course). Pavarotti delivers one of his best as well. An outstanding recording in every way."
Donizetti: Anna Bolena. Beverly Sills, Julius Rudel

"I am not a Sills fan, but this is easily the best available recording of one of my very favorite Donizetti operas.  Also it has Verrett in it, so how bad could it be?"
Donizetti - Maria Stuarda / Sutherland, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Bonynge

"Another outstanding performance by Sutherland and Co. - one of my favorites in fact."

"Again, not a Sills fan, but this opera has not received much attention from the recording studios, so this will have to do for now..."
Donizetti: Lucrezia Borgia
Donizetti: Lucrezia Borgia
"An outstanding recording of a somewhat neglected (though not entirely) Donizetti gem."
Donizetti: L'Elisir d'Amore
Donizetti: L'Elisir d'Amore
"I confess I am not a huge fan of this opera, but Pavarotti makes a powerful advocate for Nemorino, so I bought it anyway."
Donizetti: Poliuto (complete opera live 1960) with Maria Callas, Franco Corelli, Antonino Votto, Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala, Milan
Donizetti: Poliuto (complete opera live 1960) with Maria Callas, Franco Corelli, Antonino Votto, Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala, Milan
"A thoroughly obnoxious La Scala audience registers their ecstatic enthusiasm for a terrific performance of one of Donizetti's lesser knowns. I am not a Callas fan (and if I were this performance would not be the basis for being so), but the male leads are spectacular--especially Corelli. Note, the sound is ghastly and the audience intrusive--be warned."

"Even Pavarotti's fiercest critics admit that he could sing Donizetti, and here is a collection of arias to prove it."
