The list author says: "Here is a list of Donizetti's best (well in my opinion anyway). I have excluded "Don Pasquale" because it irritates me and "La Favorita" because I can't find a decent recording (would have been nice if Verrett and Pavarotti had gotten together to take care of this problem back in the 1970's--oh well)."
"To me this is the better of Sutherland's two studio "Lucia's." She is in fresher voice yes, but also she is much more aggressive and energized in her singing. She is helped along by Pritchard, whose tempos are consistantly faster than Bonynge's. the only downside is that Cioni although certainly no slouch, falls far short of Pavarotti in the closing aria."
"Sutherland's interpretation here is more refined but rather tame (as if she's holding back) when compared to her earlier studio outing. The male cast is outstanding. Unfortunately, Bonynge takes it a little too slow for my taste and I frequently find myself dozing off despite the beauty of the performance."
"A thoroughly obnoxious La Scala audience registers their ecstatic enthusiasm for a terrific performance of one of Donizetti's lesser knowns. I am not a Callas fan (and if I were this performance would not be the basis for being so), but the male leads are spectacular--especially Corelli. Note, the sound is ghastly and the audience intrusive--be warned."
