Books I have read in 2010

Lance Ortiz

Pirate Latitudes: A Novel
Pirate Latitudes: A Novel
"Crichton's long lost manuscript finally comes to light and it is more of a historical based adventure rather than a science based thriller.  I enjoyed the read, learned a lot about the period and had fun with the action and adventure."
Altar of Eden
Altar of Eden
"It is nice to see James Rollins stepping away from Sigma a little bit.  I prefer his earlier stand alone books, Sigma Force is still quite good though.  This time we get a more focused story with three major encounters that build an interesting plot with lots of action and good characters."
Gears of War: Jacinto's Remnant
Gears of War: Jacinto's Remnant
"Takes place after the Gears of War 2 game.  Builds more on the character development and again half the book is flash back to the "Hammer Strike" event.  The rest of the book deals with the rebuilding of the COG on Sera.  Good read with lots of interesting bits of info about the world of GOW."
Magician: Apprentice
Magician: Apprentice
"Trying out some more fantasy series.  This was a good easy read.  Some if it was very similar to Lord of the Rings.  Lots of action and interesting characters."
Magician: Master (Riftwar Saga, Book 2)
Magician: Master (Riftwar Saga, Book 2)
"The second half of Magician is a good epic story with lots of characters.  It was interesting that half of the book did not even focus on the two main characters.  It had a great ending and I am looking forward to the next in the series."
Shutter Island
Shutter Island
"Good build up to a climactic ending.  Lots of head scratching moments that become clear at the end.  Saw the movie after reading the book.  Great adaptation, much of the dialog was taken directly from the book."
Blue Like Jazz: Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality
Blue Like Jazz: Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality
"Reading for our small group."
The Wrecker (An Isaac Bell Adventure)
The Wrecker (An Isaac Bell Adventure)
"Finally finished it.  Pretty good story with a nice bit of action at the end."
Impact (Wyman Ford Series)
Impact (Wyman Ford Series)
"This started out with a number of interesting but seemingly unrelated stories at first.  By part two it came together nicely.  Even though the premis was a bit far fetched I liked the idea.  This turned out to be a pretty good book."
Dragonflight (Pern: The Dragonriders of Pern)
Dragonflight (Pern: The Dragonriders of Pern)
"Good story over all, I did not enjoy the writing style.  Took a long time to get to the point or to move the story along.  I got the the point to where I was skimming sections just to get it done with.  Probably won't read the rest of the series."
The Box: Uncanny Stories
The Box: Uncanny Stories
"Cool collection of short stories from the master.  Most of them very good, some just ok."
Monster
Monster
"Kinda fun supernatural story with lots of humor and interesting characters.  What is it like to have a deamon for a girl friend, Why don't people ever notice magical creatures around them."
Silverthorn (Riftwar Saga, Volume 3)
Silverthorn (Riftwar Saga, Volume 3)
"I liked this better than the fist two books.  More magic, cool creatures, more concise story and good ending.  But leaves it open for future development."
Split Image (Jesse Stone, No. 9)
Split Image (Jesse Stone, No. 9)
"Quick easy read.  Enjoyable mystery and interesting characters."
Bite Me: A Love Story
Bite Me: A Love Story
"Another chapter in Moore's Vampire saga.  This time with vampire cats.  Still fun.  Abby's sections are sometimes funny and often annoying though."
The Nixie's Song (Beyond The Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 1)
The Nixie's Song (Beyond The Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 1)
"Frusterating,  Everyone in this book has a surly attitude."
A Giant Problem (Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles)
A Giant Problem (Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles)
"Still have crummy attitudes but the get rid of the giants"
The Wyrm King (Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 3)
The Wyrm King (Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 3)
"Opps, every thing they did in the last book was wrong, start over.  Oh yeah everyone is mad at eachother  until the last few pages.  This series was not nearly as good as the original."
Zendikar: In the Teeth of Akoum: A Magic: The Gathering Set Novel
Zendikar: In the Teeth of Akoum: A Magic: The Gathering Set Novel
"Wintermute's first book,  I was not expecting much but wanted to read a MTG book since I enjoy the card game.  Many of the characters, areas, creatures, were familiar but the writing did not flow and the story was weak."
The Postman
The Postman
"A vision of a post (no pun intended) apocalyptic world and what one man has to do to survive.  I enjoyed this one and it really pulled me in.  It got a little weird at the end but still good."
The Giver
The Giver
"Tightly controled society where everyone seems happy.  But one boy sees the truth by storing the memories of the past.  Good fast read but I did not really get the ending."
Under the Dome: A Novel
Under the Dome: A Novel
"Massive brick of a book.  Over 1000 pages but it was such a fast read.  Reminds me of the stand in its format and readability.  Great story, where we see the primal evil in people come out when they are put in such a dire situation.  One of Kings best in recent years."
Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine
Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine
"Lots of interesting stuff in here.  Seemed all over the place in some spots, but that is Beck.  Lots of scarry facts and makes you think.  The addition of the original Common Sense was nice."
White Night (The Dresden Files, Book 9)
White Night (The Dresden Files, Book 9)
"Another great addition to the Dresden Files.  More of a murder mystery, and not as epic as other entries.  But great book with a really cool sequence at the end.  We also find out the secret Harry's brother is keeping."
The Spy (An Isaac Bell Adventure)
The Spy (An Isaac Bell Adventure)
"Not nearly as good as the previous Bell novels which were great.  The bad guy was hardly developed and there was a long drawn out scene on the train where Bell is trying to figure out who dun nit with no luck.  Vital information just popped up out of no where to push the story along."
Fever Dream
Fever Dream
"This was interesting mystery, yes mystery.  Go to point A to find a clue that leads to point B and find a clue that leads to point C and so on until we get luck and find the end of the trail.  The ending was weak and a lot of people died or got hurt for a little closure for Pendergast."
Frankenstein: Lost Souls
Frankenstein: Lost Souls
"I liked this addition of Frankenstein much better that the conclusion of the pervious trilogy.  With that said, it was entertaining but still not great.  Much of it was a rehash of the original books but in a small town setting.  I have always liked the witty banter between the two main characters and that continues here, but now they are married."
The Overton Window
The Overton Window
"Easy read."
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Millennium Trilogy)
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Millennium Trilogy)
"Excelent conclusion to the series.  The name says it all.  The events of the second book stir up lots of investigations, cover-ups and murders."
A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1)
A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1)
"The longest short book I ever read, and that is a good thing.  Very epic story about the main character a wizard batteling his demons and growing into one of the greatest ever."
The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle
The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle
"Pretty good Dresden story with excelent illistrations."
His Father's Son
His Father's Son
"Um, This was pretty good.  Kind of different from Little's normal fare.  No wierd supernatural element.  It even has a good ending."
Daniel X: Demons and Druids
Daniel X: Demons and Druids
"These seem to be getting better with each new addition, but still not great.  This had a better more interesting story, but the cheap shots I did not like.  Something unexplained happens and all they could say is that it is better explained in another book."
The Windup Girl
The Windup Girl
"I had a really hard time getting into this for some reason.  Maybe it was the random Thai words in the text, or the assumption that we should know something that was never explained.  It was also difficult to determine who was the good guy and who was the bad guy.  The story shifted focus a lot and was hard to follow.  Some parts I really like but in all it was a tough read."
Neverwhere: A Novel
Neverwhere: A Novel
"Very cool story about an alternate world under London, with interesting characters and a good adventure.  Gaiman's writing style is witty and fun at times, and dark and forboding at others."
Year Zero
Year Zero
"Pretty good end of the world senario.  Interesting take on cloning, exploring the morallity of it and the consequences."
The End of Religion: Encountering the Subversive Spirituality of Jesus
The End of Religion: Encountering the Subversive Spirituality of Jesus
"Reading for our small group"
Fall, The (Strain Trilogy)
Fall, The (Strain Trilogy)
"The Fall was a good read with lots of action and it moved the story pretty well.  We got the sence of how big the infection was and what people are doing to survive."
Fall of Giants (The Century Trilogy, Book One)
Fall of Giants (The Century Trilogy, Book One)
"I enjoyed this.  It tells the progression of the first world war from the perspectives of a number of characters that had verious levels of involvment.  The individual stories of the characters were just ok, but the over all story was great.  Learned a lot and enjoyed the read."
The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror (Pine Cove Series)
The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror (Pine Cove Series)
"This was a fun Christmas story Christopher Morre style."
