The list author says: "Nintendo Entertainment System (also called NES) is an 8-bit video game console (released by Nintendo in North America 1985). In Asia(released 1983)was known as the Family Computer, abbreviated as the Famicom.
The best-selling gaming console of its time, the NES revitalize the US video game industry after the video game crash of 1983, and set the standard in everything from game design to controller layout. Nintendo introduced a now-standard business model of licensing third-party developers, authorizing them to produce and distribute software. In 2009, the Nintendo Entertainment System was named the single greatest video game console in history by IGN.
FUN FACTS: 1: Released following the Video Game Crash of 1983, they didn't want it associated with video games so they called it an Entertainment System. And made it front loading to mimic a VCR, which was a design flaw(bends the pins). The front loading mistake was never repeated, even by other companies with cartridge systems.
2: Donkey Kong, their first success was inspired by Popeye(Later NES released a Popeye game DK style). They were sued by Warner Bros. because of King Kong and despite being a small company, decided to fight it and proved that WB actually disowned the King Kong rights to film their remake for less money. One Lawyer (Kirby) was rewarded with a VG character named after him. This win made Nintendo a respectable company. WB ended up paying damages for the lawsuit to Nintendo and others, and later invented LJN, which released numerous movie based games on Nintendo. Most are considered terrible games. Youtube search Gaming Historian-Donkey Kong for a more in depth and interesting telling of this.
3: Mario(Jump Man in DK) was named after the landlord of the creators. The DK sequel(Donkey Kong Jr), Mario was the villain. The only Mario game where he is the villain and you must beat him. Donkey Kong Country (SNES), you are actually playing as DK jr. Cranky Kong is the original DK."
"A New Clone version of the original NES. Its small(Same size as a catridge) but more reliable since its a top loader. Compatible with old controllers. CON: Castlevania 3 won't play due to an extra chip in cartridge. EDIT: I recommend buying the official Top Loader if you are considering buying the system."
"The Original Console, front loader. A Classic great 8-bit system EDIT: BUY THE OFFICIAL TOP LOADER! Its worth the extra money if you are buying the system. Front loading version actually bends the pins on the system, so it has no possibility of lasting forever. Top Loader erases this concern."
"The game that made the system. Short but still GREAT EDIT: Available in so many ways, even updated graphic versions etc. Still original cartridge recommended or ROM version with original graphics. All Gamers must play it. Most hacked/pirate versions are garbage. They are mainly the zero world stage(Amusing to discover on the original cartridge, and a glitch not in remakes)"
"The American version of 2. It's actually a japanese game called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, with the only change being the characters. SNES released Mario All Stars which has real MARIO 2 titled as The Lost Levels. EDIT: Canon, introducing many villains that are staples of the series. SPOILER: Beating the game, you discover its all a dream. Sorry to ruin the ending if you read this unaware."
"My favorite NES game. A Must own. Not as easy as some will lead you to suspect. EDIT: Often considered the best NES game ever made. And a lot of people consider this the best video game ever made period to this day. But play it yourself and enjoy before deciding if its overrated."
"classic EDIT: Made simultaneous with KID ICARUS, considered sister games. Kid Icarus IMO is a much harder game, but more linear. Remade on DS as Metroid Zero featuring a map. The map is great. Back in the day, you could play it and eventually discover what to do. But nowadays, its much easier just look online and why not? If the Info was around back then we would of all used it."
"Simple, addicting puzzle game. Tengen's version(release pulled after Nintendo sued Artari) is far superior and possibly the best version. Worth buying if you are passionate about owning the best version. EDIT: The story behind this is Tragic. The 2 creators made it to kill time while working. Russian Gov't took ownership, One of the creators killed himself. Look online for full story."
"I was so excited about this game. Then I rented it. biggest let down ever. I'm still not over the horribleness that is this game. EDIT: Have been playing this game a lot since making this list. It was disappointing for NOES, but I now actually enjoy this game, despite not being able to beat it. I get so close and then GAME OVER. One day I will beat it."
"Again, not what i expected in a bad way. This game was !@#$% EDIT: Played this game recently(last time was back before SNES was released).. It might be even worse now then when released. Sucked when released and has aged even worse now."
"GRR! I hate this game. Why was I always playing it? AVGN did an amazing review on this POS. EDIT: Might be fun for nostalgia, but the it took decades for a good Ghostbusters game to come out and that one featured original voice acting(available on the WII)."
"Back to games that kicked !@#, Batman ruled. EDIT: Surprisingly, there are very few Batman games that were horrible. Batman Forever games avoid and Gamecube's Batman Dark Tomorrow are the only 2 I played that were horrible. All others are at least good."
"There was a Goonies 1 game, but not in America. Mickey is trying to save a mermaid in this one. Eh. Would of worked better if linear, but the weakest part is the controls when its not side scrawling action."
"A cool accessory, but not fun. In other words it looks cool. EDIT: It just doesn't work. Its a gimmick. There is no reason to own this then to say you own it. It flat out doesn't work well so why use it."
"Now this was AWESOME. The joystick brings you back to the arcade machines some of these games started on. also had turbo feature. Turbo Controller was cool too. EDIT: Still great for using this for Shoot 'Em Ups. Not better then NES controller, but adds something fun."
"So simple yet so addicting. you are a giant animal, you destroy buildings, cars, etc. You eat people. That's all. EDIT: Still great. Outside of graphics, this game is remade for most Nintendo consoles with the same gameplay and new characters."
"This is fun with 2 people. Or alone. Nintendo released an exclusive remake for DS, available to Japanese Nintendo club members only and featured a Zelda spinoff character (Tingle, introduced in Majora's Mask. He also had a non-US released spin off game called Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland)"
"EDIT: I removed the original Donkey King NES cartridge to put this here. The comments on that was : The original classic. Featured Mario before he was called Mario. Sadly, missing a level from the arcades. I can not stress it enough, If you want to buy an original Nintendo and cartridges, skip the classic system unless you want to repair it from over use and buy this@"
