The list author says: "After shopping for a carry on bag for hours and considering many possibilities, here are the best carry on bags I've found.
Important factors to me were: * Holding plenty of stuff * Being comfortable to carry * Good value
Items I considered as possibilities for a versatile carry on bag include: * tote bags & beach bags * very large purses & diaper bags * "shopper" bags * duffle bags * backpacks & rolling backpacks * briefcases & catalog cases * traditional rolling vertical bags * messenger bags & laptop bags
From scouring the web, I found that most of the above don't come in dimensions well suited to being used as carry ons. Most were a long ways away from using all of the permitted space. Others violated the 9" limit by a lot.
The following seem to be *somewhat* available in about the right size: * beach bags * very large purses * duffle bags * backpacks & rolling backpacks * traditional rolling vertical bags
I have included the estimated MSRP prices for each bag, but all of these were available for 30% to 50% off of MSRP, especially if you are willing to compromise on the color. I was able to find all of these bags for under $100.
Some of the bags included are a teeny bit over one of the dimensions but are soft-sided and can be reasonably packed and still fit within airline limits.
Many of these bags are useful for other activities besides air travel."
"An all-purpose soft-sided rectangular bag. Very large and versatile. This bag comes in tasteful solid colors. Measures: 21" x 14" x 9" with backpack straps and optional shoulder strap (sometimes sold separately) Est. MSRP: $100 This bag also comes in a rolling version."
"Similar to Rick Steve's bag, but a tiny bit smaller. MSRP is higher, but the actual prices seem to be lower. This bag comes in many solid colors and prints. Measures: 20" x 12" x 8.5" with backpack straps and a shoulder strap Est. MSRP: $140"
