The list author says: "As part of my personal appreciation of The International Year of Astronomy 2009, I am creating this list of cool products on Amazon to help others locate items of interest. Why is 2009 important? Modern astronomy is recognizing an important event: the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope to study the skies! When Galileo pointed his "sinful spyglass" to the heavens, science and humanity were forever changed. For more information about this and the year long celebration that commemorates it, please visit the following websites:

Please join me in celebrating modern astronomy and in preserving our dark skies for future generations--the Galileos yet to come! :) NOTE: If you are new to astronomy, avoid the temptation to rush out and buy a telescope in a department store. Do a bit of research before you lay any money down for "serious" equipment. As avid a stargazer as I am, I actually use my binoculars more than any of my telescopes! :) You can see the Great Orion Nebula fairly well with decent binoculars."
