Steven Universe

 (771)
8.22014NR
This first volume of Steven Universe is all about discovery. Steven is still an over-enthusiastic boy and more often than not, that gets in the way of his progress towards becoming a Gem. However, little by little, episode by episode he learns more about the Crystal Gems, their secrets, their history and the full extent of their powers.

Season 1A: The Beginning of a Great Adventure
Verified purchase
It's the Crystal Gems! Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl AND STEVEN!

The first 26 episodes, paired into 13 episodes covers Gem Glow through Ocean Gem, though technically this is not the entire first season. Hence probably why these episodes are being sold as "Volumes" instead of Seasons. It should be noted that "Coach Steven" (episode 20, aired August 21, 2014) and "Rose's Room" (episode 19, aired May 14, 2014) are in reverse order in episode 12. Aside from that this is the collection of Season 1A.

The series follows the adventures of Steven Universe, a half-human/half-alien boy and his three extraterrestrial guardians: Garnet the reserved leader and responsible mother of the group; Pearl the perfectionist and overprotective mom of the group; And Amethyst, who is the carefree older sister who is sometimes self-conscious about herself. Despite living in a home with a somewhat Modern Family structure, Steven's father still lives outside of the house but is there to provide fatherly advice when his guardians cannot.

Despite Gems being polymorphic sentient rocks that on a Kardshev Scale are part of a Type III to Type IV civilization and being stuck on Earth for about 5000 years, the Gems protecting Steven still find life on Earth alien probably because instead of integrating themselves into human society, they had isolated themselves to certain areas.

It wasn't until human Greg Universe fell in love with the gem Rose Quartz that the Gems had started to interact with the outside world again and that their Homeworld also started to notice. Rose Quartz was the leader of the Crystal Gems, and when she died giving birth to Steven, this started to cause a rift between Pearl and Greg, which explains the distant behavior between the two. We'll find out more how deep this rift was in later seasons.

If you get volume 1, be sure to get the second half of season 1 in volume 2.

A Good Series for Lessons of Loyalty
Verified purchase
Steven Universe is a wacky series very much about coming of age as a young boy. Steven is well-intentioned and a loyal friend, but makes the self-involved mistakes that every child makes. The Crystal Gems in charge of helping him cultivate his powers represent different types of influences: Pearl is the perfectionist who expects too much too soon, similar to a "new Mother" type who doesn't realize kids are kids; Amethyst is like the cool teenage sister who wants him to have fun and often ends up a bad influence, but will always be there to help with real trouble; Garnet is like an experienced parent or teacher, knowing when to let Steven do it himself and when he needs a bit of guidance, a bit hands-off, but still protective of him. Steven's father, while not totally prepared for the responsibilities of parenthood, does his best to give advice about life, often being the grounding influence in Steven's life. Overall, this is a good, slightly wacky series for kids. Watch it with them, help point out the good lesson from the wacky comedy once in a while. They will learn good lessons about learning, responsibility, and loyalty.

Believe in Steven!
Verified purchase
This show...how do I start? I grew up in the 90's and I feel like back then my parents would sit down with me and get just as much amusement from cartons as I did. There were shows that I watched well into my teens, like reruns of invader zim and animaniacs, because they were intelligent and funny enough for adults while still being appropriate for children. I feel like this cartoon, among some others (Adventure Time, Gravity Falls) have returned to that ideal. They're smart and engaging enough for adults but cool and silly enough for kids.

This show it's also unique because it has 3 strong female leads and a diverse cast of supporting characters. It depicts diverse families and doesn't shy away from showing Steven's occasional struggle with trying to explain his family to others. It doesn't shy away from having an engaging plot or deep, multifaceted characters (gem pun definitely intentional) who approach problems in varying ways. Steven himself is dealing with growing up and saving the world in place of his mother, who gave up her physical form to create Steven, and they approach the issue with sensitivity.

The art style is polished and the animation is lovely, plus the voice acting talent is INCREDIBLE.

I'm in my 20s and am addicted to this show, and I know that as a child I would have been obsessed with the Crystal Gems in the same way that I was obsessed with Sailor Moon.

All in all, I wish I could give this 6 stars.

A Show About Emotional Development
Verified purchase
A show that blends magical, childish antics with the relatively emotionally heavy subject matter of growing up without actively involved parents.

Steven's mother is dead, and his father is mostly absent. He is effectively raised by his late mother's trio of magical comrades who do their best—with their often clashing personalities—to foster Steven's emotional development.

Steven is who he is, always. This show teaches us that, although we may face challenges that seem insurmountable, if we are sincere in our ambitions and efforts, good things will follow.

Bugs with uploading. Episodes OUT OF ORDER, MISSING Pilot Episode, and MISSING Specials/Shorts.
Verified purchase
I do love the show, but there are some bugs with uploading.
They are MISSING the Pilot Episode. They say there are 3 Seasons but there is NOT 3 Seasons YET there is ONLY 2 SO FAR. Each season has 52 Episodes, Season 1 is done but as of January 25, 2016 Season 2 is only on Episode #26 of 52. They are MISSING the 6 Specials/Shorts.
They have a hand full of Episodes OUT OF ORDER. So that makes it hard to watch the show and the story line that goes with it, and it makes with auto start next episode. Because you have to stop watching and go look up what episode is to be the next one in order.

To help others out here is the RIGHT order the Episodes go in and there Original release dates, and a list of the Specials/Shorts and there Original release dates.

Wait, really? I like this-- no, I love this?

This is from the perspective of someone who doesn't have kids but likes cartoons and good writing.

This series came into my life very much at random when a friend mentioned she saw an episode or two and liked it. Looking at the art style, brevi, all sorts of things I did not expect to love this series as much as I do. The humor is insightful and witty the story is at times heartbreaking (though more so in the second season).

It's probably more my thing than yours, oh random reader on the internet, but I love it and what I love most is that I feel like the writer knows how little boys behave, so you end up having a main character who is a sweet, earnest kid. If you're a lover of quirky, oddball humor like maybe AdventureTime, I recommend giving this series a try. I now own 2/3 seasons.

New favorite show!

This is a fantastic children and adults' cartoon. It's incredibly diverse in its characters, and the writing is wonderfully smart. The nice amount of race representation is something I definitely appreciate as well. I bought this for my nieces and nephew and ended up binge watching the whole 40 something episodes during my two days off, I couldn't stop watching it, it literally had me glued to my seat. I caught my brother in law watching it along for 3 episodes when he came for dinner. The plot is very interesting too, and never makes the audience feel young or stupid. Honestly I didn't think it was gonna be this deeply woven and intriguing, what with it being on cartoon network and it's decline of smart, well written cartoons in the past 5 plus years. I love the characters, you can see how much love and thought went into each and every one of them. The art style is adorable, and some episodes and animation are downright beautiful. The whole show is expertly done, really. I've set my tv recorder for every Thursday night - I can't wait for the next episode! Wether for you or the children in your life, this is a great, well written and character driven show.

BEST SHOW EVER - but this price is heinous
Verified purchase
This is my favorite show on television. It has everything I love in a great cartoon, or any great TV show (plus fantastic music!).

I give the show 5 stars, but Amazon gets only one star because their "Season One" only gives me half of season one of the series - I paid $25 for 26 episodes when Season One actually ends with episode 49 - false advertisement. One dollar for each 11 minute episode is outrageous. Amazon is charging the same price for a 22 minute episode of a cartoon that they charge for an episode of Scandal, which is twice as long at 44 minutes. I should get twice as many episodes for that price! Shame on you, Amazon.
