If this were nonfiction, the story would probably be the same.

I was startled to find that some reviewers were bored or unimpressed by this film until I read one review which suggested that there are probably viewers whose idea of a movie means action and special effects.
In the plot of Siren, the first thing that is pointed out is how some people are dealt a rotten hand in life, and then how there will always be someone looking to take advantage of those people. The movie is a series of life lessons -- I'm guessing the "meh" reaction in some of the reviews is due to the very understandable, natural reactions by the characters to their experiences. No cars, trains, or spaceships blow up, and no otherworldly mysteries are revealed, which might be a drag if you're looking for chaos porn.
I gave this film five stars because the characters are relatable, and the teller of the tale did an excellent job of bringing the story to life.

Unique view of sirens.
Verified purchase
Bringing the concept into current times, the story explains the siren, or at least one of them. Slowly delving into the turmoil living such a life would cause the siren herself this tale is excellently executed with great scenery/photography, on point acting and a great script and subplots.

I'm giving it five because they avoided the trite ending it seems almost all modern tales of this nature fall trap to - the exciting car chase at the end. So very nice to see writers and directors are still capable of telling a thought provoking story without using any effects at all, only cinematic narrative. Kudos.

A unique premise for a love story well told and acted
Verified purchase
This film has so many great things going for it I don't know how I missed it until now. The characters are totally believable, especially Vinessa Shaw's siren Leigh. The locations are limited but contribute an enormous amount to the film's mysterious atmosphere. The starting premise begins like fantasy but becomes scientifically plausible and then back again in an intriguing way. There are many other subtle ingredients thrown into this wonderful concoction: corporate intrigue, betrayal, love, passion, death and redemption. Siren's ending is fitting for its romantic underpinnings. If you heed Siren's call you will have seen a very good film.

Unrealistic characters and human interaction.
Verified purchase
The main guy was cast really poorly. He was not charming at all; in fact, I hated him from the start. He has basically no facial expressions at all and is super arrogant. And what even is the meaning of this movie? It seems like the writer was trying to say that men becoming violent is not necessarily their fault.

Also the story does not make sense: SPOILER: This woman has had cameras surrounding her property since she was a teenager and she has no idea how to fix them? It's not realistic! Obviously she cannot have men around, but having no friends at all makes no sense! Not realistic! The scene where she plays the cello really poorly and thinks it's good? Not realistic! The guy is supposed to be Special Ops but a tiny little woman was somehow able to stab him? Not realistic! It's fine if the premise of the movie is outlandish, but you cannot make a good movie with unrealistic human interaction. That is what we watch movies for, after all. Not worth the watch, save your time and view something else.

Modern Day Fairytale
Verified purchase
A modern day fairytale and a, sort of, scientific explanation of how Sirens could work their magic. Traditionally Sirens had magical voices and songs, but this pheromone change-up is fine. Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping beauty, Rapunzel type of tale where maiden is isolated, virginal and surrounded by bad guys until a handsome Prince/knight sets her free by slaying the baddies and taking her away with him. It's cute, but some scenes are acted so badly that they made me blush. It confused me that she had a power to ensnare all men, birds, fish etc etc, but (apparently) not human females. Human females were not attracted to her at all. There was nothing to indicate if gay men were immune or if gay women could fall under her pheromone spell. All of that was, rather obviously, avoided. If women were immune...why wouldn't they send in a bunch a women to get her instead of combing the planet for a handsome soldier man with no sense of smell?!? 1 woman, who wanted to kill her, saw her as a goth/witch, but I got the feeling that it was because she thought she was a witch as opposed to her perfect woman? I'm not sure why having a man with her made her able to finally leave. It was a lot, there were many holes. It was OK

Loved this Movie

I would watch it again. The scenery, even in the house was beautiful. I loved Lee's beauty and heart. Great romance even though I was afraid the guy was working for someone. I love how it ended though. Wonderful ending. It ended as I hoped. A movie like this is timeless. Yes, I like exciting movies with bells and whistles, but I love fatal romance and psychological suspense with slow burns. You know something is going on underneath the surface. I almost didn't watch it because the description was shallow compared to the way the movie was. I found it ingenious.

Good Flick!
Verified purchase
Not a slam, bang action movie, but nuanced, and due to the controlled, almost "pastel" delicacy of the sets, a movie that tells a very small, and then a large story across a small stage. Almost a sense of "Russian Dolls" as the story reveals itself. The NYT Critics blew it on this one. Enjoy it!
