Sole Survivor

Only a handful of people have come through major plane crashes alive and alone. "Sole Survivors" examines four of those stories: The toddler, the "Miracle Girl," the co-pilot and the seeker. They survived when no one else did. But they still cope with confusion, guilt and the complicated emotional aftermath of what it means to be a sole survivor.

A Brilliant concept well-fulfilled!

This video really took me by surprise. Deep emotions and tears came over me many times as I was watching. These stories are so powerful in themselves that little interpretation or overseeing narration is needed... or given. There is no preaching. There is no typical categorizing or projection or esoteric "psychologizing." I highly laud the producers for letting the stories and feelings of these survivors and family members unfold very simply and naturally without forcing anything or trying to make them fit into some preconceived idea or format. My general takeaway is that life itself is very fragile and remembering this every moment makes me more compassionate and grateful. Videos such as this are gifts to us all.

Good concept but the film drags and misrepresents
Verified purchase
Like other reviewers have said, this documentary starts out well and has a great premise, but then drags on and on and you find yourself just wishing it was over. The families of the Comair 5191 crew, along with the Airline Pilot's Association union, also do their best to misrepresent the cause of the Comair crash as the tower not paying attention, when it was primarily the fault of the crew. It's not up to the tower to make sure you're in the right place (what if it's really foggy and they can't see you?) it's up to the crew. There is a step that pilots are required to do when they line up on a runway to make sure they are on the right runway via magnetic heading. Runway 22 means 220 magnetic, Runway 26 means 260 magnetic. They lined up on Runway 22 instead of Runway 26, and all their instruments would have shown them a significant error with a visible indicator. They didn't notice this because they were rushing through their checklists. I feel bad for the guy, I really do, that he has to live with the fact that he killed 49 people though making a mistake... but it really seems like the families of the crew are in denial and this film is helping them stay there.

We don't get too much info on the other flights and why they crashed, it mostly follows the guy in Reno... but really you get no impression of any of these people's lives or who they are. It's very shallow and unfulfilling.

Profound, bittersweet, thought provoking
Verified purchase
This documentary is very profound the way it shows the psychological and emotional effects of being the only survivor of a traumatic plane crash. These sole survivors are an exclusive club that has a unique bond with each other that only they can relate to and explain. This is a sad and beautiful story at the same time, bittersweet. George (and his daughter) and Bahia’s (and her father) first time meeting and bond is heartwarming. This documentary really makes you think about fatalism and each of all of our purposes in life, thought provoking.

I lost an acquaintance of over 12 yrs, a passenger on flight 255, the flight where Cecilia Cichan was the sole-survivor. I thought this film was well done, compassionate, and educational, regarding the human psyche, soul, more. One thread that struck me throughout watching this film: God is there in the sorrow and pain, loss. Faith is the only thing to cling to when there is nobody and nothing left. I was touched deeply by this film.

A touching, insighful, compassionate film
Verified purchase
I'm amazed that Ky Dickens was able to get such an intimate view into the lives of people who have lost so much, or who are struggling to figure out life after surviving plane crashes. Three cheers for her, and for all the courageous people who chose to open up and share their lives with us. It seems that no matter what the question is, human connection and compassion is the answer.

Sole Survivor Spain import blu review
Verified purchase
This is for the region free spain import blu as I saw nothing written on it here. So I had to settle for this one as the codered release has become hard to find and sells for expensive if you can find it. But I must say, I was pretty pleased with this release. Video quality is fantastic, it has english language option, is region free and is a great lil horror film. If your after this one on blu definitely give a try

Touching film about being part of an unusual minority
Verified purchase
This documentary is compelling because it explores the psychology of being part of a unique human minority. To be the only survivor of a plane crash is a very particular and unusual trauma that we don't usually think about or pay attention to. To watch a handful of survivors, who have felt isolated, alone, and often guilty in their experience for years, connect with each other, is beyond powerful. I agree with other reviewers that there are moments where the pacing lags, but overall this is an emotional and powerful documentary.

Very Interesting Documentary
Verified purchase
This documentary was so interesting. I don't think it focused on all 14 survivors. I survived a car crash but in no way was it like what I saw on this video. I didn't realize that people would feel guilty for surviving.
