"The Landing"

A brilliantly composed mystery thriller and documentary about NASA’s Apollo 18 – its last mission to the moon. Problems developed during the Space Capsules programed re-entry that led astronaut pilot Bo Cunningham to manually guide it away from its intended Pacific Ocean splashdown to land by three parachutes into the desert in central China. Bo Cunningham, a loner and somewhat "Top Gun" type personality and the two other astronauts survived the landing unharmed. Conspiracy theories evolved after Bo Cunningham was found safe and unharmed 36 hours later by the U.S. search team with questions about what happened to the other two astronauts. Don Hannah’s role as Bo Cunningham is totally believable and gripping. A+ acting and directing. The cinematography is excellent and especially loved the black and white China desert scenes that involved the three astronauts of an otherwise color movie – for me it brought my mind back to the much-loved TV series "The Twilight Zone." Highly Recommended – Five Stars!

Never quite gets to the moon, or anywhere else either

I thought this might be a prequel or sequel to the 2011 found footage sci-fi horror venture "Apollo 18." It is not. Instead it is a completely different conspiracy theory faux documentary about a fictional Apollo 18 flight that mysteriously ends up landing in the desert in China. There is very little science fiction to the story other than the fact that it simply never happened. Conceptually the film is ruined by NOT depicting the events in found footage format. It is further marred by silly over the top graphics and strange music interludes of 70's pop and rock music that do not match the narrative at all.

Fake

Somehow or another this movie came up in my recommendations and I actually watched the whole thing believing it was a legit documentary film. That's my thing...documentaries and history. Not taking away enough from space programs I have watched, I was fooled or mislead, depending on your point of view, into watching this. It is very convincing and portrayed in such realistic fashion that I was sucked in. After having watched it I started to do a little research because I wanted to know more. My searches came up empty for the quick references I use online and finally came across a movie review of this film. I was shocked to learn that this was totally fake! Part of me likes the fact that the film makers were clever enough to pull this off..Kudos guys. The other part of me feels like I've been intentionally mislead by the program description...A riveting investigation...blah blah blah. I guess ultimately I have had my mind broadened a bit and will be even more diligent in my future scrutiny of all things online. Well, that killed the evening relax after work time and I'm off to have a beer with the neighbors. Two stars because there is no two and one half.

Ah, Apollo 18. The mission that never flew, but has flown over and over again in fiction -- and somehow, it always goes wrong. If you manage to get through it without being attacked by rock monsters, blasted by a massive solar flare or stranded on the Moon by a failed LM ascent engine, you may still face danger from an even more unexpected source.

It's difficult to say anything at all about this film without spoilers, especially since some of its major twists happen in the first 20 minutes. The story was totally different from what I expected, and I was left with no idea where it was going. From there it keeps opening out in different directions, with constant surprises even as the overall thread becomes clear. Almost the only thing I can say is that this film is, ultimately, an exploration of the darkest places in the human heart.

Is "The Landing" perfect? No -- some of the use of Photoshop to place the actors in archival NASA photos is a little cheesy; some plot elements are unbelievable; but overall it's quite an achievement, and one of the best astronaut films I've seen in a while. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention.

Once you realize this is a fake documentary, i.e., a Mockumentary, then you can appreciate it as a movie. Not reality.
Overall it was better than most I have seen, some errors in fact, but it was just a movie.
Cleverly done, nice soundtrack acting, editing and overall production was good.
I did find it interesting how it was slanted towards making the survivor out to be a killer and socio-path. Which is a clue to how we can be led to believe anything if it is edited right and you have an agenda. We see it every day from the news, internet etc... This is an interesting movie, that is done well and could be believable to many. Just remember, this wasn't real.....

People often remember things that never happened. The Landing proves this.

David and Mark Dodson's faux documentary recounts the story of a lunar mission that went disastrously wrong. At every turn the authenticity of the time depicted appears to confirm the reality that the mission indeed did take place. What is surprising is how one can imagine that in a distant memory there remains some recollection of the events having taken place when in fact they never happened. Being fooled can be a pleasurable experience providing you are curious about human memory and what it means for future humans. The filmmakers do a superb job of convincing an audience of the authenticity of a significant historical event that never happened. It is an entertaining and useful ride.

Entertains: Not Nearly as Bad as Some Reviews Would Have You Think

I'll start off by saying I really enjoy "alternate histories" and am a big fan of NASA's glory days; put these things together, and my interest is piqued.

Browsing through my "recommended videos" I came across this film, and it sounded like a fun distraction; then I read the reviews. For heaven's sake, lighten up! It's a faux docu-drama of a fictionalized Apollo 18 mission, you'll get exactly what you expect. I went in expecting a fairly low-budget, moderately cohesive but imaginary storyline; and that's what I got.

Is the story seamless? No. Is the acting top-notch? Nope. Are there vast differences in the quality of production between scenes? You betcha. All that said, it's an interesting concept, far more realistic than the much more sci-fi "Apollo 18", and much less ominous than "Capricorn 1".

So if you like fictional, historical documentaries, astronauts and 70's music, and you can just relax and enjoy the show, it's an entertaining 80 minutes.

Why does this film exist?

A "fake" moon shot that , oh oh, may have Chinese people trying to do something, but maybe not, but one guy was maybe crazy, but maybe not, and the FBI guy who treated the Chinese desert like a crime shooting location but was ignored. There is no reason for this film school project. It is not satire, not humor, not a crime story, etc. Is it some sort of propoganda? Who knows? About what? Oh, acting was good for faux interviews
