I never write reviews, but needed to respond in light of the silly negative reviews posted thus far. This is simply a terrifically casted film with lovely acting and beautiful photography. A perfect adaptation of an excellent novel. No explosions, no super-heroes. Just a wonderful, thoughtful film, well worth watching, especially if you are a book lover.

This is one of those movies that is just so well acted, so beautifully filmed, that it will stick with you long after you watch it. The trifecta of stars Emily Mortimer, Bill Nighy and Patrica Clarkson...just brilliant casting. I have never read the novel upon which this movie is based, but each character in this film is so alive, so fully fleshed. This story renews, if not one’s love of, the important of books in life. Moreover, as is stated outright in the film, the importance of courage. Perhaps those who gave this film fewer stars expected more to have happened, but I thought I was beautiful, deeply affecting and well worth watching. A perfect example of the art of subtlety.

A beautiful, creative, emotional film

No car chases, no gun battles, no sex or violence. If that is what you crave in a film then go watch something else. On the other hand, in you believe in dreams and aspirations, love well-paced dialogue, and revel in superb acting then by all means see this one. The is Emily Mortimer's film, and she pours herself into the role. One reviewer of her work described Emily as "our English rose" and lamented that she is vastly unappreciated, both comments absolutely on the mark. In this role Ms. Mortimer plays Florence Green, a young widow whose dream is to open a bookshop in a beautiful, quaint seaside village somewhere in the north of England. Her performance is edgy and thoroughly captivating, putting all of her considerable acting abilities on constant display. She is backed by superb performances by Bill Nighy and Patricia Clarson and a script which is both beautifully written and well-paced. The cinematography is stunning and the scenic backdrop rich and evocative. If you love character studies and crave something tender, loving, and beautiful this is a film for you. Unfortunately, this work will not find its way to your local multiplex nor is it likely to crack into the ranks of cable or satellite TV, so a purchase is probably a necessity. It will be an investment you will not regret.

A great story unfolds about a woman and a young girl communicating across the divide between the two influences. Beautiful cinematography, memorable soundtrack; hard to find a flick like this nowadays. Grab your sweetheart and enjoy it together.

First of all, I almost didn't watch this moving film because of the negative reviews...but so glad I did. It was wonderfully filmed and the acting was superb. I love the British films where subtlety and what is not said speak volumes. This is a quiet film with few words, however the outstanding performances carry the story through facial expression and body language ...which require full attention. If you invest yourself in this film, you may be glad you did!

Misleading Trailer / Sad not Happy Movie / Still Good Movie

While this was a good movie but the trailer is quite misleading. I am getting a bit tired of studio marketing departments clearly disingenuously and manipulatively deciding to create trailers that present a move in a light totally different from the actual movie. I know this must be done to increase viewership and therefore revenue. It reminds me of the funny YouTube video of The Shining Trailer showing a happy family with bouncy happy music. This trailer presents The Bookshop as a potentially light, warm and inspirational movie with happy music and with a potentially happy and uplifting ending. The ending of this movie is anything but happy and in fact leaves the viewer shaking his / her head in disbelief and empty-feeling that the bad guys unfairly win and the heroine just goes of on a boat to a who-knows-what ending. The acting and dialogue is good and seems spontaneous , but the screenplay sometimes misses subtle details like showing the main character's competing bookstore and that aspect. It may be best to wait and watch this when it's added on Prime than to pay. Just my humble opinion.

I love quaint bookshops and movies featuring quaint bookshops (You've Got Mail, The Love Letter), but unfortunately this film is lacking in something, namely a captivating story line. Though it has plenty of charming sets and costumes, as well as wonderful actors, including Emily Mortimer, who's always charming herself, The Bookshop, based on a short novel by Penelope Fitzgerald, needs a stronger plot to captivate today's mass audience. The film is a bit like Chocolat without the mystique, the humor, and the riveting controversy Vienne brings to that sleepy French town.

The Bookshop takes place in the era that the scandalous-for-its-time novel Lolita appeared. Mrs. Green (Mortimer) heavily stocks the book in her shop, but that's about all it amounts to. No one questions her morals. No townspeople clamor to oust the newcomer. Instead, the movie focuses on a snobby wealthy woman's desires to turn the bookshop's premises into an arts center. Sorry, but that's not enough to draw in audiences or keep them watching.
