In 'Her Beckoning Hands' Arlene Biala has carefully crafted every piece. I imagine Biala pulling her words from the sky, fighting hard for each one she was able to get. With all her conquests does she lay them out in this work, proudly showing off a hunetrs eye that never misses its mark. Biala describes each piece with such specificity in order to convey the most meaning you can get out of a word. I imagine her packing a suitcase, each word, the suitcase.
It is *so* very rare to find literature of this kind. After five waves of colonization over thousands of years very little has survived about the many histories of the different ethno-linguistic groups from the Archipelago. Back to present day we are in the midst of watching as products of the diaspora including Biala help us re-create our various cultures, traditions, memories, and stories from our people. Her writing enriches our history and I am thankful.
