But, wonder of wonders, the Super Mount F is perfect for the task of holding this very large smartphone or phablet - in its case, no less.
The device itself seems to be all-metal construction, except for the pads that contact the surface. The design is very sleek.
Essentially, the Super Mount F is a clamp. The projecting cylinder on the side is a screw mechanism which screws in and out quite smoothly, despite not having a knurled gripping surface. The clamp opens to 5/8ths of an inch wide.
My Galaxy Note 2 is in thin plastic case and I had plenty of room to insert it in the clamp.
I was particularly careful in tightening the clamp for fear of damaging my screen. But between the plastic case and the case of the device itself, my concerns were not realized. I was able to tighten the clamp sufficiently to securely grip the phone.
There are two ¼-inch tripod sockets, one on the side and one on the bottom.
I tested the clamped phone with hand grips and several tripods and am exceedingly well pleased.
I recommend this unit highly, but caution that some people have been unhappy when using the Super Mount F with devices that have sharply sloping sides.
Update 5/19.2014: My iPhone had a plastic protector case around it which protruded past the face of the phone, which is where this unit wants to grip. I was constantly trying to crank the knob to keep the phone from tilting over, and eventually stripped the threads. It gave me about a year of good service.
It is small, light, strong, and stays out of the way, but will always cover a small part of the screen, you can adjust that any way you see fit.
It has a mechanism to keep from stripping when you ratchet it all the way down, clever as I like to tweedle with it. The same mechanism prevents damage to your phone. This has worked very well.
The cushioning are seems small but has held up and done its job.
Hold devices much more securely than it would seem and you do not have to over tighten it.
All that said, it does less well with curved devices and cases, and if you have a very thick case such as an otter-box, you will have to take the phone out of the case. It opens to about a maximum width of 1.5 I phone 4's.
It will do what you want for a decent price.
+small: fits nicely in hand, stores in glove compartment, pants pocket, camera bag.
+well-made: The screw-action is smooth and there are no sharp edges to cut my hand.
-->When my phone dies, I will still use this a generic tripod clamp or perhaps with another phone.
-->Dual tripod mounts add flexibility for mounting orientation.
-->The tool can be attached to the iphone in many different locations
-->I use this without a tripod to make it easier to hold my phone when taking photos.
-->I also use this with an iphone as a gps stand on my car dash and as a video player/clock stand at my desk.
-cylinder can be a little bit slippery so don't try to turn it after eating greasy onion rings :).
-the grip sometimes sticks to my phone's screen protector and pulls it off.

It's all metal and after you figure out how to use it (no instructions...but it's intuitive), it does the job just fine. Simple and effective.Published 7 months ago by lester boswell
Great for tripod use. I personally wanted it to film sports and tighting the mount down on my screen scarred me. Great quality and easy return. I would buy from them again. Read morePublished 10 months ago by FNA
Little intelligent mount device for any smart phone.
It is small and very portable and secure to use.
Solid, well made product. My only reservation is that it grips the screen, but I knew that going in. Read morePublished 17 months ago by Colin
