When he saw me standing there-a hooded figure with a nightmare face - Jayden froze, shocked, scared to death. I reached out to push him back into the elevator. I only intended to give him a shove, but when my hand touched his chest, my fingers flashed and I felt something jolt through my arm, and Jayden was suddenly flying backward as if he'd been hit with a sledgehammer. As he slammed against the lift wall and slumped to the floor, I stepped in after him and the doors closed behind me.

There was a faint smell of electricity in the elevator-a hot, crackly kind of smell-and as I hit the button for the ground floor I realized that the skin of my hands was shimmering, too, just like my face. And the ends of my fingertips were glowing red.

The elevator started to descend.

I looked down at Jayden. He was very pale, his face white and rigid, his hands shaking.

He stared at me for a moment, then wiped his mouth and spat on the floor. "What the hell are you?"

I guessed that meant that he wasn't too badly hurt.

"I'm your worst nightmare," I told him.

Great and unique super hero origin story that held me throughout the story. I love that it's not from the same old material, and that the hero in question has a power all his own that hasn't been done to death before. I also like the setting, which is London or somewhere around it. Great and realistic tale of a hero written on the scale of real life expectations. If you developed powers suddenly and tried to use them against someone else, it wouldn't go off without a hitch. You would make mistakes, perhaps use too much force, and later question your actions (even feel great regret over what you'd done or almost done). I love iBoy and I think others will too.

I bought this book for a book group I am in with my son (12 years old). The parents were a bit concerned with some of the very adult topics (rape, violence, drugs) in this book, but we felt that there was nothing that our kids wouldn't not have been aware of through news or other sources in their lives. We read the book and the tough topics were not presented in a salacious manner but rather in a realistic but censored way. The one complaint from the book group was the ending didn't have meaningful solution to it. I would recommend it for readers 12 and above IF there is a sense of maturity.

What we don't expect the most is that the superpowers come from something that we use on a daily basis. This book really redefines the meaning of "superhero", altering the regular theme of superhero novels and movies. The one thing that this book can make you realize- is that the power of man and machine working together is heavily underestimated, just like the power of the iPhone.

P.S. This book has aggressive language, drug and alcohol reference, gore related violence and mature sexual topics (also gang related discrimination of race, gender and stereotype).

I have now read five or six novels by Kevin Brooks an I don't regret any at all, I might even call him my favorite author. I really like his style of writing and this novel in particular really sparked my interest. It might just be me but it usually takes me more than a couple of chapters to actually get into a book, but with this one I was hooked from the start. Just the idea of a boy with particles of an iPhone in his brain. It amazed me an I wanted to see what Kevin Brooks would make of it. It was a real page turner and I couldn't put it down. I recommend this to anyone with an imagination waiting to be inspired.

This book has it all: excellent characterizations, setting (London's gang infested ghetto), and a fast-moving plot. The character's perseverance against overwhelming circumstances is inspirational as is his superhuman ability to stop the gang violence. I so wanted to use this book for a high schoolers' book study, but was prevented from doing that due to working in a private, highly conservative student library. The repeated use of the F-word prevented that. This book is so socially redeeming, it deserves to be read.

This isn’t the prettiest story - boy meets girl, girl is violently gang raped and boy is almost killed by an iPhone thrown 30 floors down from a tower block. It is a brutal insight into gang culture in inner city council estates. But although it’s heavy, it’s an excellent read once again from Kevin Brooks. I will definitely recommend it to the teenagers I teach, but it may not be suitable for younger readers.

Its uplifting and terrifying, wildly imaginative, incredibly original, occasionally ridiculous, and completely un-put-downable. What a book! What a fantastic story! My teenager can have it tomorrow. Once I started it, he wasnt going to get it until I finished it. Kevin Brooks, you need to retire, you will never write anything better!

Kevin Brooks has consistently written great young adult books. His books never shy away from difficult subjects and never patronise the reader. And with iBoy, his fantastic run of books continues.
The subject material of iBoy is not for the easily upset or offended - rape, drug dealing, extreme violence, gangs - but it is refreshing to read an author for young adults who is not afraid to deal with these issues.
The world that Brooks' creates in iBoy is a harsh and forbidding one; a world where awful things happen on a daily basis and everyone is too afraid to say or do anything. Until, that is, the arrival of iBoy, a new superhero. Of sorts. He is intent on taking out every frustration on the gang that hospitalised him and raped his friend. But iBoy's own sense of good and evil soon become warped.
Highly recommended.
