Customer service is not geared to handle physicians and is a little less consumer oriented than some I've tried. They also need to know their products and limitations better. Instead of integrating blood glucose with their main health app they are currently independent applications. The strips are perhaps 20-30% more expensive than Truetest & TrueMetrix strips, but less expensive that One Touch strips (unless you get the generic). The visual display disappears and can be hard to read in a bright room and doesn't show up at all when linked to your iPhone (they are defaulting to your iPhone here). There are no beeps to guide you, although the unit will say it needs access to your microphone. On the plus side the iphone software does integrate with the online system and the data ports nicely (not so with OneTouch). The interface is decent, but I don't see an easy way to import data although you can export 3 months (not more). Graphs are okay and data collected seem reasonable. They also write their data to Apple Health, but sadly DO NOT read data.
Was very impressed by what they sent in the box. The BG5, with Micro USB cable, lancet tool (also included a handful of lancets as well), and a very nice zip up carrying case.
Love the fact that this unit is rechargeable. I fully charged the unit the first day I got it and 10 days later its still on that original charge.
Having said that, I would have given this product 5 stars but I have grief with the software. Again, I hate that they force me to scan a new bottle or the software will not go any further. I had the BG1 Align and if your phone was in power saver mode, the unit would frequently loose communication with the phone right at the time you applied your blood sample, you have now wasted a test strip. I am happy to report this not an issue with the BG5, connects every time to my Galaxy Note 4.
I reallllllly wish they would let me scan a bottle when I'm ready to open a new bottle of strips like practically every meter on the market. I'm a big boy and I can put on my own big boy pants, do not need the iHealth app holding my hand. To the meter's credit, it can store measurement in its internal memory as a stand alone meter if you forgot your phone. Once paired again with your phone it transfers all measurements taken over to the iHealth app on your phone, this is a very nice feature not having to manually enter measurements that you took previously.
The software for the most part is useful. The best part is when I go to see my endocrinologist I can just hand her the phone and she can glance over my results for up to 90 days worth of testing. Can also email her my measurement logs, statistical averages by morning, afternoon, and evening, can also provide a graph of my numbers with the trending tab.
Many people are always asking about the accuracy, For the 10 day period that I have used this product, I was also using my old meter to do cross comparisons. I found that my BG5 was within plus or minus 2%, pretty close. At the time I'm writing this, my BG5 read me as 111, while my TrueTrack registered 113, I honestly couldn't tell you which meter was more accurate without going to some lab and having my blood sugar measured there. In my opinion....pretty darn accurate.
The test strips you can buy online at amazon and come with free shipping. $12.50 gets you 50 Test Strips, I usually buy 2 boxes for 100 strips at $25 bucks, which is $10 cheaper than my TrueTrack test strips (and that's after insurance has covered some portion of the cost). This meter will pay for itself in three months with the cheaper test strips....I like that! :)
The current release of the software is a little buggy, when you press on the manage icon, there are three tabs, Logbook, Statistics, and Trends. If you press on Statistics tab, nothing happens, your still just looking at the Logbook tab. I have to select Statistics tab, then press on Summary icon then go back and press on Manage icon and I can see my statistical averages. Annoying, but not a deal breaker, still get to the information I want to see. ****UPDATE: iHealth has fixed thid bug in latest update
Bottom line, I am actually quite happy with this meter. Having a wireless meter is a great idea and a longtime coming.
As a Beta Tester for the upcoming iHealth app update I am even more excited about this meter.
Highly recommend this product to anyone with a smart phone or Bluetooth enabled laptop or tablet.
than my Humana True Metrix. Maybe there is a download to fix this I don't know of one. I like this concept because I wouldn't have to write the data down so much but it is useless if the readings are not correct.
