Top customer reviews
After we set the bulb to a light blue, calming tone, we sat down to read next the lamp the bulb is in. Twenty minutes in, we both share a satisfied smile. But almost immediately after, the bulb flicks off and on in less than a second is back on FULL LIGHT BRIGHTNESS. Weird, must just be a small glitch, we assumed. I did some disconnecting, unscrewed the light bulb, turned off and on the switch. We got connected again and everything was back to business. But as I was setting our scene, it did it again: flicked off, then back to full blast. After that, we got "Disconnected" and "Updating" error messages within HomeKit. The bulb proceeded to turn on and off. So we let it do its thing, assuming some fancy over-the-air firmware update was happening and left it alone.
Come back four hours later, we're getting ready for bed. We set the light to a low orangeish color (I guess), and get comfortable. Halfway through our debate about whether we should get brunch the next day, the bulb does it again. Turns off, switches to full brightness. At this point I just decide to turn it off using HoneKit. Well, ten minutes later, it turns itself back on to full blast.
Right now we can only use the bulb as a normal light bulb. And even then, it randomly disconnects and resets itself. We've made a joke of it that our cat, Poquito, has developed mind control abilities and is playing pranks on us.
As of now, I suggest you stay far away from this product. If there's a software update or a new hardware version to fix these issues, then it'll be a great little thing. But righ now it's just an expensive lightbulb that actually performs more poorly than our $5 energy savers we got from Target.
A few weeks ago the manufacturer released a software update through their app and, while a pain to install, this seems to have solved all the problems that are outllined below. I have been using the bulbs with their updated software for a few weeks now and have not experienced any of the random activations, poor performance and general glitches that I had experienced before the update. I can now confidently recommend this product as it does everything that I want to do with no major issues.
In principal, this is an excellent product. It works seamlessly with Apple's homekit, no hub is required, and the adjustable colors and brightness are super cool. Setup was relatively easy, follows standard homekit protocol. Controlling the lights with my iPhone or siri works well about 75% percent of the time and when it works it is fantastic, however it is extremely frustrating when one (I bought two) or both of the bulbs don't respond and I'm left in the dark. Ok, maybe I can chalk that up to poor network connectivity and live with it, although other devices in the same area don't seem to have any issues.
However, more recently one or both of the bulbs will spontaneously flicker on to full brightness; this occurs when the lights are on a lower brightness setting, or even when they are completely turned off. It is really unacceptable for a bulb advertised to reduce power consumption to randomly turn on in the middle of the day when no one is home. Based on other reviews on this page, I am not the only one experiencing this issue.
I want to love this product but the spontaneous activation issue in particular makes that impossible.
I've requested assistance from their service department, but as of now, I've received no return e-mails or contact. It has been 5 days, including the weekend, since I contacted service These have so much potential, but if my experience is normal, this hub-less setup is not ready for prime time. I've not used any other product with or without a hub, but I am not impressed with my experience so far with the Rainbow 8 bulb.
If the connectivity issues are resolved, I could easily give these a 4-5 star rating.
