If video recording is interrupted for any reason--most commonly because the SD card is full--the entire recording session is lost.
The is pretty irritating when you have been recording for a significant amount of time and then the entire session is lost. It's hard to understand why it just doesn't stop recording just before running out of space, or give a warning, or save in some format that isn't destroyed when the SD card fills up.
I've used my Contour+2 for over a year now, and while it has a few small flaws, I love it. The slim design and assortment of attachment options make it a breeze to secure to pretty much any surface, and the rotating lens makes it easy to level it when mounted to irregular surfaces (one of the biggest reasons why I chose it over the GoPro). I have used it both as a dash cam while driving (clear enough to pick out license plates of vehicles in front of me), as a helmet cam while skiing (easier than GoPro to turn on/off and level with a Ski glove on), and as a handheld cam while rafting (waterproof case included).
Lightweight and sleek, fits just about anywhere in any orientation.
Great video quality, minimal fish-eye effect
GPS option great for plotting trip path and syncing with video in terms of elevation, speed, location etc
Easy to turn on/off even with cumbersome gloves/gear, audible alerts to indicate recording start/stop
Decent battery life, even on max resolution/fps
Quicktime movie format can be pretty annoying to work with
GPS embed only works with proprietary software
Still uses mini-usb instead of standard micro-usb
Tends to occasionally freeze, requiring battery removal to reset
If you're looking for a compact and handy action camera to take with you on all your outdoor excursions, that can easily be attached anywhere to anything and still shoot straight, then the Contour+2 is the cam for you.
I got fast helpful responses from them when I contacted them a couple of weeks ago.
Camera was used on several Bike trips on a helmet while riding enduro bike
on dirt roads muddy wet forest paths. I liked the recorded video quality a lot, particularly when recorded on sunny afternoons. videos are very good and sharp -good balance of contrast and color.
for my taste and eye -video color and contrast balance seemed better, than in some You tube review videos .
If You want to use it for spy sting operation action to record secret conversations -then You have to use the external microphone option- say attached to Your chest pocket:)- because
camera has a microphone protection foam inside it- a rather thick piece of rubbery closed cell foam behind the tiny microphone hole. to protect it from dust and water. That foam can be swapped for a better sound transparent material.
I have not tested recorded sound from optional external microphone but it promises to be good because camera records scratching high pitch sounds which come from its body when you sweep your finger over it - indicating that built in microphone itself records well.
this camera is one of the best action cam designs out there at a relatively low cost at this time of writing. Camera body has a high quality feel, look, design and weight. "GPS mapping" of Your adventure or backyard trip works too.
The Contour 2+ solves a lot of the annoyances of the earlier models. (I owned the Contour HD also). The rear door is much better designed (I lost the HD's door).
The switch on the top is nice and easy to use. The Bluetooth to the mobile app is nice to set the camera up on the helmet, to ensure that it is pointed in the right place. It would be nice to be able to view content on the camera via the app, like the gopro app, but that isn't a feature.
The mic, frankly, sucks. Contour acknowledges that it's noise-cancelling method causes issues when there is cyclical sounds that is low frequency (such as in an airplane!). It suggests turning down the gain via the app, but that doesn't really solve it.
It does, however, have a 2.5mm external (mono) mic plug in the bottom, which I use. Finding a 2.5mm mic is impossible, so I use an adapter to a 3.5mm mic. That combination does a great job.
Alas, it seems like Contour is losing out in its fight against gopro, sony, and tons of other mfgs.
