About the Book

With the right application, the iPad and iPad 2 can become more than just devices for watching videos, listening to music, and reading electronic books. Your iPad can be a device that's used for teaching and imparting knowledge to children in nearly any environment. This ability to teach anywhere opens up a wide range of knowledge for children. The iPad has apps that are specifically designed to build skills in reading, math, and writing. How many apps? Thousands. Some are good, some are not so good; this book sorts through the clutter and tells you about the best educational apps that are available. Many of the apps featured in this book are free, some cost no more than $10, and many are somewhere in between.

iPad for Kids is for all of you who want to get started using the iPad as a teaching tool for your kids. Think of this book as a personal tutorial, a one-on-one class with an expert user of the iPad. You get to stay in the comfort of your own home or school and learn how to do these following things:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the iPad controls and interfaces
  2. Connect to the Internet with the iPad using WiFi or a cellular connection
  3. Learn how to add apps and multimedia content to your iPad
  4. Print documents from the iPad
  5. Communicate with others via email
  6. Teach kids from toddler-age to fourth grade how to read--and then read better
  7. Explore and practice mathematics concepts
  8. Discover the world of art and music
  9. Have your kids see the world around them in new ways
  10. Create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations for advanced school work

Last fall, my school district handed me a brand new iPad to use with my students with disabilities. I was excited, but soon learned that using this wonderful tool was going to take some work and planning to move from "playing" with the iPad to strategically using it for instruction. I spent hours learning how to set up my iPad and this book would have cut that time tremendously! Even after using the iPad for months, this book taught me some short cuts I didn't know about. The book is well written--instructions are clear and useful and there's even a bit of humor sprinkled in! Lots of screenshots make it very easy to follow along on your device. I liked how apps/suggestions were provided for different age groups and subject areas like music and art. Obviously, new apps come out every day and it would be impossible to cover them all in a book, but this is a great place to get started.

Oh thank goodness, finally a guide for the iPad so my kids will stop all the traditional forms of education and play. I mean, traditional books and games are okay, but iPad games are so much more fun and educational. Plus, I've found that kids are much quieter when using an iPad, allowing me to work on my iPad while they "play and learn" on theirs.

Without this book, the iPad just sat there. No kids wanted to get near it. Now that I've read this book on my iPad about my iPad, the kids are quietly sitting in the glow of the iPad 24/7.

This book was purchased thinking it would be chocked full of useful apps. 50% of the book is how to use an ipad which I did not need. There were only a couple of apps for each age/grade level and since I was looking, as an educator, for a specific grade, there were not enough listed. The app reviews were very thorough.
