Top Customer Reviews
To start off, let's be clear about what this product is as there is often confusion about this sort of device. This is a rubberize phone case like any other cover. But this one has a battery in it. Your phone plugs into this case that fits tightly around the device. Your phone still runs off it's own internal battery. But this case monitors the phone's battery charge through the charging port, and when your phone battery depletes, this case recharges it using it's own battery. Basically it's having a battery backup for your battery, snugly packed into a rubbery phone protecting case.
It fits the device well. It leaves space in the proper places for all the buttons and camera lenses and everything so the case doesn't become 'in the way'. The exception is the 3.5mm headphone jack. The case gets in the way of the headphone jack, but it comes with a little extender wire that plugs into the phone and passes through the case easily to compensate for that. So it becomes not a big deal at all.
The case does add girth to the phone in terms of length.. If you are getting it for an iPhone 6 plus , that's probably not a huge deal because the phone is already gigantic. You probably weren't keeping it in your pocket anyway so it's not like it's suddenly going to be too big to carry around. But make no mistakes, this does make the device slightly longer. It does not add much thickness, however. So if you keep your device in a sleeve or purse or anything of that nature, it should still fit just fine.
All in all this device does exactly what it is supposed to do. It dramatically extends the battery life of your phone between charges.
The only reason it drops to 4 stars instead of 5 is for the claims on the back of the box. They are a tad exaggerated about just how much the case will add to your battery life. It says you would get 845 hours of stand by time (That's total battery time before it's fully drained without using it at all.) That's 35 days. You might be able to get stand by time like that if you dramatically optimize your phone and disable a large percentage of the applications that run constantly in the background, keep Bluetooth and wifi turned off, and put it in airplane mode to disable to cell radio. But set up like any normal person uses a phone...no way.
It should be noted that every cell phone manufacturer uses this same kind of 'optimized' results when reporting battery power. In fact, the printed claims on the box for this ZVoltz product appear to be just doubling the same battery results that Apple claims for the iPhone 6 Plus. So you should not take these figures to be a poor reflection on the product on the manufacturer. They are following standard industry practices. It's just that the standard industry practices are dumb.
It also claims 53 hours of talk time and 31 hours of video playback. It'd be a stretch to get those kinds of results in ideal conditions with modifications done to disable other battery consuming elements of the phone. No real world user should expect to get those kinds of results in practice.
That is not to say that this case won't greatly extend your time between battery charges. IT ABSOLUTELY WILL! There is no reason you shouldn't get through at least a full day without charging using this case even if you are a super heavy user who's talking/texting/browsing/game playing all day long. If you are a more moderate user you should realistically expect 2-3 days between charges using this case. If you barely turn the phone on most days, you might see 4 or 5 days between charges. That's a huge improvement and makes this device worth every penny. But the numbers on the back of the box should be looked at as absolutely ideal under very controlled conditions. That's a general annoyance I have with battery representations.
To put this is real world terms, the battery that comes inside the iPhone 6 plus is 2915mAh. This case adds an additional 4000mAh. That is 1.4 times larger than the internal battery. So however long you can use your phone now under normal conditions, multiple that by 2.4 and that's the kind of total time you can expect (roughly) using the ZVoltz battery case. If you get 1 day of use now, you should expect 2 and a half days when using this case.
Finally, the quality of the case is good. It feels sturdy and durable. It is not a cheap flimsy piece of junk by any means.
Unit failed to charge after a few months. I went through drill (including taking photos of connector ports) and got an RMA. Shipped the thing, and haven't heard a word several months later.
Most of the extra bulk is found along the bottom of the phone, where the charging and headphone ports are located. Roughly half an inch is added on that end. But along the sides, and on the back of the phone, the case is thin and comfortable. I'm kind of curious about where the battery is actually located in this case. I suspect it is thin and spread throughout the back of the phone.
The case feels good in my hand, comfortable to hold, and easy to locate and use the power and volume buttons.
One added bonus with this case: It charges using a more universal "micro USB" cable. AND, when the phone is in the case, charging the case also charges the phone. This means that I am able to charge the phone itself using micro USB, rather than Apple's standard cable. I have a LOT of micro USB cables, and very few of Apple's proprietary cables.
One minor gripe (and this could be a deal breaker for some). The extra half-inch that the case adds to the bottom of the phone means that the headphone jack is harder to access. Not all headphones will be able to plug directly into the jack while using this case. To solve that problem, ZVOLTZ includes a short (3 inches or so) extension cable. Plug the extension cable into the jack, and plug your headphones into the extension cable. This may be moderately incovenient (especially if you have more than one headset that you like to use with your phone). As for me, I almost exclusively use bluetooth for my listening, so it's not a problem.
Reviewer's note: I received this battery case free for the purpose of testing and reviewing
The case it self houses the IPhone 6 Plus though the charging port and is snapped in by a bumber. It's also important to note that the battery case is charged through a micro USB, which is supplied with the case. On top of that I was happy to see that the case also had an area for the speakers, which is good, because you don't have to worry about the case blocking the sound. The only con I see is that you need to use a headphone adapter to use your headphones, but don't worry it's included.
