I place a lot of plants on my porch during the summertime. Although I have lots of windows, in my house, there's very little surface area to display them. So, I move them down into the basement where I have two large windows. I've been covering the windows, during the winter, to keep the cold out. I needed this light to help keep the plants alive during the winter. I've attached it to a timer so I don't have to worry about turning it on or off.
My brother requested one to use in his basement for his floral business. I purchased the same unit but the light box can hold two lights (made by a different company).
I had this set up going for 4 months, first to grow some lettuce indoors, which failed miserably. Then I began using it for my seedlings to prepare for outdoor planting. This product does not work as I had hoped. Even completely wrapped in car visors, my seedlings were not receiving enough enough light to grow. I had better luck putting them on a table in front of my window.
This DOES NOT cast light very well, light is very centralized and you will have to have this right on top of your plants in order for it to have any chance of working. If you have multi sized plants the smaller ones will not benefit.
Overall, I am very disappointed with the performance of this product and wish I had kept with my plan to return it.
First review based on assembly:
Super easy to put together, I am experimenting with lettuce and spinach indoors since I am in zone 6b. The main use will be early next year when we start our seedlings for our outdoor garden.
I used two car visors from the dollar store to help with the reflection and will probably put one in front as well just to keep all the light contained.
Overall, great product, time will tell how the bulb will work
I ordered two of these to put one behind the other over my seedlings. (The double set was sold out and was more expensive than two singles, anyway.) I was impressed with the speed of assembly. I'm impressed with the ease of light height adjustment. But the light output seems very weak, and my seedlings are leaning and straining for light. I have the lights set to be on for 13 hours a day, and they are set up next to an uncurtained south-facing window, as well. The lights are adjusted to be just a few inches from the tops of my seedlings, and still all is not well.
One issue is that the housing that directs the light downward is quite narrow, limiting the light spread. And I think the bulbs are just very weak. I have no idea what could be successfully grown under just one of these lights, as my plants are struggling with two. I've started seeds for many years under (much cheaper) regular fluorescent lights with great success, and these guys are not cutting it.
By the way, I carefully cut the foam away from the light bulb with a scissors,to avoid having to take it out and put it back in. This takes REAL CARE in order to avoid nicking the light bulb, but I know from experience that fluorescent tubes are sometimes a pain to get in. I don't know if this one is; I just didn't want to take any chances. Other than that small difference, I followed set up directions. It took literally five minutes. If you don't have problems with fluorescent tubes fitting properly, then just follow the directions and take the bulb out, then slide the foam off and put the bulb back in.
