Anyways... George is fantastic. The first couple of times he ran, he filled up his bin pretty quickly, even though I thought our floors were relatively clean. He went all the places I'm too lazy to go. Under the bed. Under the bedside tables and bookshelves, and in all of the crevices: the places where pet hair goes to start a new life. Gross. But after those first two or so times, George's need for attention went way down. He can usually get through our entire first floor (hardwood) at least once or twice without being emptied. The carpeted area needs a little more attention. He usually needs to be emptied every time... sometimes once midway if he hasn't been downstairs lately. But, hey. He's not Rosie the Robot. I'm sure he would empty his own bin if he could. I'm fine with stepping in with an empty assist every now and then if he's going to do the rest.
We have a charger upstairs and an extra iRobot Roomba Integrated Dock Charger with North American Line Cord downstairs but mostly because, again, I'm lazy, and I would rather just leave the chargers where they are and just carry George from home to home.
The programming process is really easy, and you can program <insert your future Roomba's name here> to vacuum whenever you like. We have George start later on weekends than on weekdays, but I could totally see people who don't work at home having theirs vacuum while they're away at work.
I had one moment of frustration when I thought George was broken. He kept saying (via the app and a small light, not out loud, because that would be super annoying), that his bin was full, but I'd just emptied it. And then I reemptied it, and he was empty, dang it!! It turns out on either end of the inside of the little door that opens when you go to empty the bin, there are these little rectangles that are what the robot's sensors look through to see if the bin is full. Basically, when you empty the bin, you just want to take a little tissue or tp and make sure those rectangles are free of dust. Otherwise, the sensors think the bin is full and you're stuck in "full bin" mode. I wipe those every time I empty the bin, and every few empties, I'll take a swiffer dust cloth and just give the whole inside of the bin a wipe to get rid of any lingering dust in there. Again, easy peasy. Once I figured that out, there have been no more mysteriously full-but-empty bins.
The cats pretty much ignore George, though one seems to follow him around a bit. One of the dogs is a bit skittish around him, but only in the the exact same way she'd be skittish if I was actually vacuuming, because she is a big baby of a doberman. I've read studies (I continually wonder how they fund these types of studies) that some dogs think the Roomba is another pet and they have dominance issues with them. Apparently it helps if every once in a while you tell the Roomba it's bad, just to make the dogs feel better about the whole situation. We've never ever had that issue, but I still tell George he's bad if he goes too near the scardey-dog, just to make her feel better. You know. Just in case. But seriously. We've never had this problem.
So there ya go. We love George. And if I threw caution to the wind, I'd break down and get another, so we could have upstairs and downstairs ones that we didn't have to relocate. But alas, I have feet and hands, so I'll do the terribly difficult job (I kid. It's super easy. I'm still lazy.) of carrying George between floors, because, hey, what are friends for?
